Sorry if this has been said, or even worse, an opposite conclusion was unanimously achieved. (Also it’s a bit wordy!) so here’s my experience & takeaway:Its not just that, My last car was the 2.0 ecopoop, traded it at 125k and never had an issue. I think highway miles keep most of that at bay. Most Ive heard is the turbo kills the motor earlier than a normally aspirated engine due to heat.
I heard same RE: heat & believe that perception on Turbos was common in the early 90s.
Now:
• turbo 4cyl is replacing NA 6cyl
• turbo 6cyl in place of NA 8cyl
(Hell, twin turbo 6cyl can take down forced
induction 8cyl)
IF HEAT WAS AN ISSUE:
It feels like those particular issues-all related to longevity- have been really been dealt with.
It seems to me that turbos should not have an issue compared to N/A motors, if the vehicle was manufactured/specs appropriate to reliably run turbo.
Also, aside from managing heat for reliability and longevity, Heat kills power; much better with nice cool dense air combusting.
CONSERVATIVE TUNES FROM FACTORY! It’s insane the level of PERFORMANCE left on the table! It’s not like they hide it either since the manufacturers joined the aftermarket tuning mkt, sell more aggressive tunes AND either not touching the warranty or still leaving impressive coverage intact.
(Before my Tremor, I had a BMW 440i Gran Coupé w/ all options but AWD - I chose Track Package instead. Anyway, the turbo Inline-6 picked up a heck of a lot of torque and HP while retaining warranty… peak increase was impressive and the entire curve change was quite awesome! Just a tune, hi flo intake, hi flow cat/catless Downpipe and high pressure fuel pump knocked 0-60 down to a flat 3 sec from roughly 5sec… )
It’s interesting to say the least!
