So I pulled the trigger on an Unleashed Tune, ordered the livewire ts programmer. Now I have not received or asked for the specific tunes yet as I just placed the order. My order included 2 custom tunes because the plan was a 93 performance/daily tune and 93 tow tune. Tow tune is a must have due to regularly pulling bass boat and a dual axle utility trailer. Here is where my concern just hit me, although I do not travel frequently outside of VA (unfortunately), if I end up in a state that doesn’t sell 93 and only sells 91 is it safe to run it on a 93 tune (obviously not driving it hard)? I’m now wondering if I should have ordered with 4 custom tunes and did a 91 and 93 daily and a 91 and 93 tow or should I take the hit on performance and stick with the two tunes I ordered and request 91 octane tunes instead of 93?

I would not run 91 on a 93 tune under any circumstances. You may be safe, and you may not be safe. You'll be pushing the knock sensors past their safe range for that tune. If you can get consistently good 93 in your main driving area, you could always carry a bottle of 104+, Lucas, or other octane booster with you for those infrequent times that you can only get 91. If it's going to be a common thing, then change the tunes to 91 and you won't have to worry.

My 2 cents.

I appreciate it! I hadn’t thought of carrying some booster for the rare occasion. 93 is plentiful in my area, but I was thinking it wouldn’t be safe to test my luck on 91.

I suggest you ask Torrie@Unleashed. He's the one going to tune it and he is very responsive to questions through email. That's why I use him to tune mine. Where I live there is only 91 so I asked for a tow friendly tune for 91. I've added intercooler, charge pipes, downpipe, dual exhaust and he's updated it for every mod. And kept it tow friendly. And my lil truck rocks!

No need to worry about it, really. Ensuring the motor doesn't knock is.. well.. the whole reason it has a knock sensor ? it doesn't want to blow up as much as you don't want it to blow up.. it'll adjust itself.

So this is part of why I liked the Livernoise Tune. It had tunes for Octane Ranges. If I were you I would talk with Unleashed and see what they say. Might just need to get a 91 tune and stick with it. It certainly will not hurt to have 93 in the tank with a 91 tune

I run a 5 Star 91 tune on 92 octane gas. At highway speeds my Ranger will break the rear tires loose under hard acceleration. Got my attention the first time it did that!

Maybe see if unleash has ranged 91-93 Oct tunes? See if that option works for you?
Unless having the specific rating is very important to you to spend the extra money to have four different maps.
My thoughts are.. how long does the map change take? (Like 5-10 mins..suppose changing it during fill up isn’t so bad.. E-F at the pump is usually a few mins waiting anyway.), the hassle of having to be sure you’re putting in 91 or 93 (not that big of a deal, but I auto pilot sometimes and just hit premium ?.). The money savings from not ordering two extra tunes equals nice dinner for the wifey and I (or in your case for you and your partner if applicable.).
Last one: are there significant gains between a ranged tune vs proprietary fuel tune… my assumption is that it’s a slight margin more than splitting hairs but less than oh heck yeah.

Hope it works out in the best way possible for you.

Elevation plays a big part in octane rating. For example, we have 85 here in the Mile High and that equates to 87 at sea level. If you go somewhere that only offers 91, it's probably due to elevation. You *should* be fine.

If you're concerned, talk to Unleashed and see what they have to say.
