Do you receive a copy of the stock file download to save on your personal computer or is it only saved on the programmer? In other words, can a copy of the stock file be uploaded to your computer from the programmer? Also, how many times has anyone changed their truck, back and forth, between stock and the tune?

It is on the programmer/handheld. I have never switched back.

My concern is if the programmer device gets compromised and the stock file needs to reinstalled. Can it be recovered? Also, would it be concerning to Ford if the PCM is flashed multiple times by switching between tunes due to high fuel costs or lower mpg? I am primarily looking for the increased torque for towing. It runs plenty darn good in stock form for daily driving.

You can go back and forth as much as you want.
Where the issue would be with a tune (except the Ford Tune) is if you popped the engine and then quickly flashed it back to stock with the intent to commit fraud.
Ford has quite an extensive TSB that has many guidelines for dealership techs to use to look for clues - which wouldn't apply to you since you're running an 'approved' tune.

Also, yes gas is a little more per gallon but once you have the tune you won't want to go back.
I did that once last summer, flashed it to stock, drove to the gas station with the intention of filling it with lower octane fuel. After driving it the short distance to the gas station, it was so lame that I filled it with super and flashed it back to the performance tune. :)

Thanks for your reply. I always seem to think about the "what if" scenarios and try to prepare myself for them. I doubt that I will be switching back and forth or experience a negative situation. I will look at the positives and focus on those. So far, my Ranger hasn't let me down and given me all that was expected of it. ??

I don't think that is 100%. If you are outside 36month/36k miles from vehicle purchase, Ford Performance's provided warranty that came with the tune has ended and if Ford believes (should be "can prove") the issue was caused by that tune, they don't have to warranty it either. But I think denial is less likely as that would be a bad image for Ford and their subsidiaries. But, if you ran 87 in it with the tune and had a problem, all bets are off in my opinion.

@ControlNode I'm not sure I understand your reply.
The performance tune doesn't extend your warranty, it just doesn't void your factory warranty.
The 3/36 warranty is for the tune and the tuner not the powertrain.

I don't think Ford would put their stamp of approval on a tune and then sell it to consumers if it was wrecking transmissions and engines and voided the warranty - my wild guess...

Warranty Info said:
Engine, driveline and suspension concerns not caused by the use of Ford Performance parts remain eligible for warranty coverage according to the terms of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty
It's right there in black and white, if the tune causes the problem the new vehicle limited warranty does not have to cover it.

Warranty Info said:
Ford Performance parts are aftermarket parts. The use of Ford Performance parts may impact the performance characteristics of other systems of the vehicle. Even when operating properly, Ford Performance parts, such as these, have the potential to adversely impact other systems of the vehicle. If an adverse impact is caused by a warranted Ford Performance pack or component, the period and coverage of this Ford Performance Limited Warranty applies to the repairs.
That is the part that reads like it covers OE parts of the vehicle for the performance packs warranty period if it is determined that the tune caused it. So, as I read it, for the 36/36k period, if it's not caused by the tune you are covered by new vehicle warranty, if it was caused by the tune you are covered by the tune's warranty period. But, after 36/36k if the tune is determined to be the cause, you could be SOL unless you have another warranty that would still cover it.
