I hate to say it but ICE motors for max power are approaching a thing of the past. Eventually people won't need the guttural grown of a big V8 to cause them to dream of speed. I grew up during the 60s and 70s when muscle cars were everywhere. They are nice memories. Fast forward 50 years and the quickest production drag vehicle is the Plaid. It's not even close. The paradigm is shifting. I see Model 3s quietly goosing it from stoplights to fade off into the distance. I always laugh when a loud Harley guns it and barely accelerates.
Electric vehicles aren't ready for Prime Time, for better or worse, but you already knew that. To say the Infrastructure to support electric vehicles isn't in place is an understatement. Still haven't figured out how to recycle solar panels and windmill turbine blades, just to name two challenges.

Recent article about a family who bought a used electric Fusion, the purchase made them feel all fuzzy inside. Within months of buying it, they find out it needs a new battery - none available. ICE will probably be with us for a bit longer than we anticipated.

Power from 'renewable resources' to charge electric vehicles? Little to none - 'Clean, renewable energy' is a huge scam so far.

Edit: In the Fusion story, the replacement battery, when it was available, cost more than what they paid for the car, about $14,000.

I agree with you 100%. My point wasn't about the practicality of currect EVs. It was about the shift in perception of a fast vehicle. The last century taught us that a big loud V8 equated to speed. That won't cut the mustard anymore. The Plaid puts out over a 1000hp equivalent. Big ICE motors will go the way of classic cars.

While in Florida to visit a relative in recent years, a Tesla Model S driver stepped in it good and hard - sounded just like an electric slot car from days passed.

Nearby shopping center (1966) had a hobby shop with an electric slot car track in the same building. 50 cents per hour or $2 all day. I had a 1966 Dodge Charger (olive green) that turned me into an insomniac. The accelerating Tesla S brought back the memories.

When you start at the bottom there is no where to go but up. I mean kudos for bucking the trend and having a successful start up in the auto industry, but they have a long way to go to compete with the top auto manufacturers around the globe. Its the technology and EV knowledge that propelled them ahead, not how well they could slap together a car.
A long way to go? ICE vehicles are very quickly on their way out. By 2030 EVS are projected to be 80% of all vehicle sales. Tesla will be out selling Ford, Toyota, VW, and GM. I would even make a healthy bet that a couple of those companies will not be around in 10 years or will be a shell of what they are today. To give you a comparison, Toyota is Nokia and Tesla is Apple. I think we all know how that ended up when it comes to smartphones.

The way 'out' for ICE is a very long road. Alternate fuels have a long way and lots of hurdles to clear to match range, speed and availability of refueling and managing costs not just from infrastructure but to raw materials and long term maintenance.

A 750 mile trip in an electric vehicle is going to require more time than a gas or diesel vehicle and costs for electricity are as subject to cost manipulation.
