How do you hook up an auxiliary music source? I want to play some of my CDs on road trips, and plugged in the player into the USB, but it doesn't show up as an optional source. I only got AM/FM/XM or the phones. As far as I can tell, loading them to an MP3 player won't even work, and I don't really feel like bogging down my phone with all of the music I have on my CDs.

You could bet a bluetooth module that plugs into the 3mm output plug of the CD player. Just a suggestion.

You put your mp3's on a usb drive, and plug it into either of the usb slots under the front console. You can buy slim ones no bigger than a usb dongle, and can hold 36 gb. This is what I do.

I've used an iPod mini. My only issue with it is that because of the amount of music on there, Sync needs to index it before it can be accessed. Now if I want to listen to something specific, whether it's music or audio books that I have, I just put them on a USB drive, and it works great.

Why do you think this? I have over 1k CD's burned to FLAC format that work flawlessly. Since MP3 is an older format, I can't see why you would have any issues with it.

We tried plugging in a CD/DVD player with a USB connection, but when we tried to switch the "Audio Source", we still only got radio, phones, and bluetooth. I guess that I just assumed that since it didn't seem to recognize that player, it wouldn't recognize others either. Unless I missed something in setting it up??

Where did you select your MP3 player as the source? I tried that with a CD/DVD player, but couldn't find it as an option in my audio sources. Did I miss a step?

Once the system recognizes the device it will show as an option.

Was the device powered up?

It doesn't require a separate power source; it's just "plug & play" when we use it with the computer. I confess to being a bit of a luddite, so maybe it's just not compatible, but that's why I thought I'd throw this out to the more tech-savvy members here.

This is a DVD/CD drive designed to work with a PC?

If so, that's probably your problem.

That is correct, not compatible. Get a thumb drive i have a 64g that I have offer 100 CDs in flac and it plays just fine. Push the speech button tell the car what you want to hear done!

yeah, you need a device specifically compatible with playing music across that USB connection, not one that uses it for data transfers (at least, exclusively).

my old ipod touch (which has since died) worked well for this. it predated the carplay functionality, but sync recognized it as a USB source. since it's D.E.D. now, I'm going to go the USB thumb drive route.

The main thing you need to realize is that the USB connection only is used to give SYNC access to your music files. it does not pass-through music being played by another device. When connected to your phone it is using your phone like a USB drive. I have a small 128G USB 3 drive with hundreds of artists and thousands of songs that I leave plug into one of my USB ports, and it is not even half full. I just select the USB drive that shows up in SYNC and I can search the drive by artist or album or song. I usually just let it play randomly from all my songs and if one comes on that I don't want to hear just now I hit the skip track button. SYNC will also use playlists created by some other music programs. I expand my collection by searching the CD racks at thrift stores and rip them to MP3s on my computer at home and copy them to my USB drive.
