Flash drive for music

I placed a bunch of music on a flash drive to use with the Sych3 in my Transit connect and eventually in my Sync in my new Ranger.
I notice that it has an LED which comes on when inserted.
It works great and I love having the music but the LED stays on even with the key off.
Is this normal?
Is it safe to leave it plugged in when not in use?
If so...how long can you leave it ? couple hours? over night? Forever?

I have a 128 GB thumb drive I leave in my Ranger with no issues. A little over 9100 songs and more to add. Wife says I don't need the satellite subscription for music...lol!
