30 miles?
30 miles would cover 90+% of my trips.

And same here, PHEV yes, EV no.

Though some say that a PHEV will have poorer long term reliability since you basically have two separate drive systems in the vehicle.

Ah, ok. 30 miles would only be one-way to work for me. I thought they only have one drive system that drives off electric, and you can replenish the battery with the gas motor or plugging it in.

That's what's nice about the PHEV, you get the best of both worlds. You're not locked in to a full EV where you have to stop and charge when you're getting low. Many like myself have short commutes so you'd barely use any gas during your daily commute. Then when you're on longer trips it'll switch over to gas and recharge the batteries while driving.

Appreciate the info Carmigo.

That being said EV sales need to stand on their own without subsidies. I should pay for my own vehicle and not partially pay for everybody who buys an EV as well.
I agree with you. If EV's were the best thing since sliced bread, they wouldn't need bribes to get people to buy them.

All the EV cars and trucks are getting price increases so most of these incentives will be useless. The Ranger is a keeper.
Yes, they are getting price increases because of the tax credits.

think about it - given the following about how the system works:

That's what's nice about the PHEV, you get the best of both worlds. You're not locked in to a full EV where you have to stop and charge when you're getting low. even if your daily commute is twice as long as the battery capacity alone will get you, it still means you end up using (and buying) half of the gas on your commute as you do now. maybe less than half, even, since the electric part of the hybrid system has the biggest advantages in stop-and-go traffic. I'd bet our Rangers with a small hybrid system that only used the electric side accelerating from a stoplight would bump avg fuel economy easily into the mid-30's for a big chunk of owners.

the advantage of a PHEV type hybrid system is that say you're doing just a bunch of really short trips that never dip into the gas engine, but you're using up battery. You could top up your battery at home (sorta like now, the way so many ppl have battery maintainers) so minimize how much the gas engine needs to kick on to top those batteries up. Hybrid tech is pretty diverse, though. There are a number of ways it can be implemented (and have been implemented over the years). PHEV tech is basically just the latest version of it

Our current Rangers actually already use some tech from hybrid engines. Auto Start Stop is it.

But it's a single drive system, that runs on electric, supplied by a battery, replenished by either a gas motor or A/C. That's all I am saying.

my dad had a buick hybrid a couple years ago. nice car. but the battery gave up around 80k miles if i remember correctly. dealers wanted thousands to repair it. most of the local mechanic shops would not touch it. ended up cheaper just to get another car. I know this is not how all all hybrids are but do we really wanna make any more steps to a throw away society? works great short term in profits but eventually we are back to the environmental issues.

Well waddaya know, I learned something. I didn't realize there were so many variants.
Because the ASS in our Rangers comes from hybrid tech, you could be excused for calling it a "mild hybrid" if you felt so inclined. I have a feeling some members here might shiv you for it, though.

My wife picked up a new BMW 330e early last month. For her purposes, it's great. About 25 miles on pure electric, which covers her daily trip to work and back. She plugs in at night and has a full charge by the morning. I think she's put over 500 miles on it and is still on the 'free' tank of gas from the dealer.

The tax credit will be great bonus as well. We pay waaaaaay too much; it's kind of sickening. Hopefully it helps in some way.

I will admit that I have had some hysterically funny times, with lots of alcohol, while driving an EV. And have abused those EV's way WAY more than even a rental car. And the EV's have held up beautifully. (Well there was that one off roading episode.... wasn't my fault that guy had NO sense of humor. ) And I will most likely have similar EV related times again at some point in my life. But all that said, I have less than zero desire to buy an EV for my day to day life.

Next time I probably need to rent an EV with a lift.

Edit: Absolutely NOT condoning drunk driving in an EV. Don't try this at home. The group involved here are professionals. Stunts were performed on a closed course. No animals were hurt during the episode. Livers may have suffered a bit during the event. Contestants generally moved slowly the next day.

We help people sell their Rangers in the easiest way possible.
