I've pondered this as well John.

I've owned a 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2019. I thought I had them all but I think the small changes between 2001 and 2011 are being counted as a generation change.

Maybe @P. A. Schilke or one of the Administrators knows the answer.

Personally & technically speaking, 2019 is the first year of the midsize Ranger that should have had a new name. So - - - Ranger II, First Gen.

Having a generation break at 1998 makes sense, they went away from twin I-beam, got rack and pinion, extended the cab.

What were the meaningful changes for 2004? Aside from obvious stuff, headlights...dash plastic...etc
