Hi Everyone,

Now that I've ordered my ranger with the FX4 package, apparently the tires that comes with FX4 are outlined white lettering (OWL) - by default is the white lettering installed on the inside, not visible? Can/should I ask the dealer to specify it on the order (it was placed Aug 31) because it's not a look I like (showing the white lettering).

Thanks
Steven

It is called OWL because the white lettering is on the outside

If you don't like the look you will have to have the dealer or a tire shop switch them around. To my knowledge they can't specify that on the order to the factory

I drove with them for 10k miles and when I popped a tire on the sidewall, switched to Nittos

A little disappointed the question wasn't:

A Ford Ranger driving east at 75 MPH from El Paso, passes another a Ford Ranger driving west from Fort Worth. How big were the smiles on each driver's face as they passed each other?
That was going to be my next question.... :)

Thanks Gents, at least I'll be expecting it that way and I can plan to switch them around so the white lettering faces inwards. Maybe it won't bother me though, we'll see.

I assume there's no issue switching things so they face inwards, right?

Hi Steven.

That is for what they make a Sharpie Chisel Tip permanent marker, eh? The assembly line worker at the plant has no sheet that provided OWL out or inboard and was taught to always have OWL out.

When at the 4P launch (Pre Production Product Proveout) at Edison the tire installer put OWL inboard for "grins" for us engineers to catch. Unfortunately the installer on the final line shut the line down due to the mismatched tires and one tire handler was sent packing...Union defended him and he soon returned to the line, on a different job...

best,
Phil

OWL means outlined white letters, SWL is solid white letters. Depending on whether the tires are directional tread or not, they can be reversed to have the white inside.

As long as the tires aren't directional tread, they can be mounted with the white letters in. The tire will have an indication as to whether or not they are directional on the side wall.

Like Phil was saying that would be some funny shit to put Two OWL and two black and see if anyone noticed that one side looks different than the other. I have noticed that OWL is making a comeback and seeing more and more of them.
Halligan directional won't matter, you just have to flip the tire to the other side of the truck.

Directional has nothing to do with it. If the white letters are outside on the left they would be inside on the right, but rotating in the same direction.

I personally have never seen directional tires with white letters. That would make buying a set of four kinda weird. You would need two left tires and two right tires depending on letters out or in.

Alot of what you are seeing these days on tuners and racecars are white painted letters using a paint pen or there is also a company making stick on white letters using rubber cement for adhesion.
