Ah rookies, I can remember visiting my sales rep office in Baltimore. I flew in from California. I had the most modern flip cellphone which would store 10 of your favorite phone numbers… ? I show up at their office right before they open up. So I thought I would call my wife back in California and wish her a good morning. I punched the home contact. My friend in the contact list answered and said why are calling me so early.. hmmm So I dialed my home directly and another friend in the list answered.. why are you calling me so early.. again hmmm.. I dialed again and my wife answered.. When my sales rep opened up I told him the story. He laughed and pointed across the freeway to a building and said “ I hope you realize that is the NSA headquarters “ . At that point I realized no airwaves communication is private AND can be hacked at will. Same with internet today.

Everytime I post something I think of Randy Quaid saying “Hi boys I’m back!!” ?

Yep, I launch my boat at a ramp near SpaceX launch pad in Titusville, FL. I drive through a "dead zone" there where phone signal goes to zero for a couple miles, like a forced airplane mode. Makes perfect sense though.

Nothing hostile from me I promise. In fact as a kid we used to build and blow those things up for fun, but nowadays I won't even let those two words get together for a beer.
My brother and I did stuff like that in the 60's. I can't believe that our parents let us do that!

No agreements, no ford pass, duck duck go, microphone permissions removed from all devices. Only the phone app can access microphone. and advertising is minimum.

And yet here you are. On social media. With an agreement. And ads, and tracking. Maybe on a phone too. Anyone registered here should not worry about the rest. You think the owners of the site are benevolent? It's free, they make money off of you, just like any of the other things you think you are avoiding.

Everyone of us chooses how big we wish our public foot print to be. What is a bridge too far for some may be fine for another.

Having control over that foot print is where the rubber meets the road, and is the real question.

My neighbor just installed as ring doorbell. My every movement is now cataloged on a corporate, and in many cases a government database. Sometimes this surveillance is in real time. I am considering planting a row of trees across my front yard to protect my privacy.

I see this as a direct violation of my privacy without my consent. Same goes for the cellular modem in my vehicles. I don't want some entity listening into my private conversations while I am in my vehicle. Same goes for people on their cell phones in public. I walked into a Walmart mens room to find a punk standing against the wall filming people doing their business.

People have different privacy thresholds which should be respected. Allowing some instances doesn't negate the others. I am on this forum. I know and understand the implications of that decision. This is one of 2 forums that I frequent. I view content on others but have never registered on them.

But I will not enter a home that has Alexa type devices turned on.

My conversations with family or friends are private. Same goes for facebook. No family pictures at reunions plastered all over the internet. Hospitals hate me for not letting them scan my drivers license. The can see it to prove my identity, but not copy it. I keep my visors down while driving through cities with cameras on poles. I can't control the surveillance, but I can minimize my exposure to it.

My home electrical meter is not a smart meter. I refused the installation and informed the electric company that I do not give my permission for a surveillance device to be installed on my premises (Read the fine print). And if they installed it I'd bring law enforcement out to arrest them, and file a civil lawsuit. I told them to remove the Digitial Signal Processor (DSP) from the meter and I'd allow them to install it. They told me that it wasn't in use and that they wouldn't turn it on. I replied. "Then you wouldn't miss it if it were not there. Buy meters without the DSP."

I am not registered on any social media platforms.

I own 1 cellphone and it is privacy based, and has physical switches that disable the power to the camera, microphone, wireless, and cellular modems. I can really physically turn it off*, and the Firmware and OS are FOSS.

*Most modern phone are never turned off, just have different levels of power on. You may think that it is powered off, but it is not!

The same goes for my computer systems. All locked down. And I have a substantial computer network in my home with a large digital library. All locked down.

Computers are running on Coreboot/SeaBIOS, and hardware has firmware that does not spy on me.

I also deal mostly in cash for the same reason.

Why make it easier for them.

I like tech. I own tech. But I fight to insure that it does not own or control me.

This is a part of my level of privacy threshold.

It is our lifestyle choice.

The terms here are minimal. I use a privacy browser so I don't even see ads. Just because you signed everything Anybody threw at you doesn't mean others do. And a few forums are the only (social media) I frequent. Fuckbook had been removed from every device in the house along with all other forms of non forum social media. I digress as you already know more about everyone on the planet than they know themselves.

they are just selling your location data and data they collect from your truck cause you consented to it by using the app. Get over it. your data is being sold and monetized in everything we do.

Can't do much about the agreement, but run a reasonably secure OS like some flavor of Linux, and judicious firewall settings and choice of browser + a good Add blocker can certainly even the odds somewhat on the other points.
