I just picked up my truck from the dealer on Saturday. This is only the second new car ive bought, the first one was a Subaru and i had terrible experience with the dealer on warranty claims etc. I resisted the finance guys sales of all the ford protect and extended warrantees telling him i needed time to research them and that if i needed them I would make a purchase before the factory warranty was up. He didn't like that and brought in the "guy who knows trucks really well". He tried to come in and tell me i needed it, that the turbo is a ticking time bomb and that ill need to replace it. I laughed and said well maybe Im buying the wrong truck and I should reconsider and honesty if I didn't have confidence in the truck or hadn't waited 4 months I would have walked out that moment.

That said anyone turbo go boom here?

Don't worry about it Jason. The finance guy, like most, is a jackass, trying to scare you so he can make money. From what I'm seeing there isn't any massive known problems with the turbos on these trucks. Congratulations on the new Ranger, and enjoy the ride.

BTW, that was a great comeback about buying the wrong vehicle. :)

Also your turbo is covered I believe under the power train 5/60 warranty. I racked up 250k miles on a turbo - only oil cooled and back in the 80s it was mineral oil . It's 2022 and turbos have become very reliable , oils have improved as well. Higher probability of other sh*t failing on the truck.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't have mattered how long I had waited! I would have given them both a piece of my mind, and walked out, never to return!

This "issue" is a sales gimmick, just like leasing, added dealer incentives, etc. All of this reminds me of the old Dodge... "Don't make a $300 mistake..."! (probably no one here remember that!) The solution?

When your posterior gets that pucker-like feeling, leave!

Extended warranties aren't worth the paper they are printed on. If you are that concerned about vehicle repairs, lease and trade up every few years.

Yep ,I would have said "Oh crap I don't want the truck if it has issues!" . Most likely would have involved the sales manager to make them squirm or maybe even throw in the ESP to buy the truck , LOL .

Guy sounds like a dick. I am not aware of any huge issues with a turbo on most applications these days, just oddballs and outliers. People don't like to admit it but things can go wrong when you are putting together 25000 parts, give or take a few, to make something like a car or truck.

I also like your comment about the truck not being the right one maybe? I would be tempted to leave word at Ford Corporate that this guy is basically telling new customers they are actually buying a shitbox that Ford won't stand behind. Perhaps he needs retraining lol

Hi Jason,

I have stated this many times but will repeat it here for you.... Ford Tests to equivalent of 150,000 miles of a 90 percentile customer (Mining operations, Oil field, Currier fleets etc). Built Ford Tough means something more than PR hype. If there was a Turbo systemic problem it would have flushed out and been fixed long before your truck was built or any trucks were in customer hands way back to before 2019... There have been a few infant mortality issues with Turbos on the 2.3L Ecoboost, but not very many and they flushed out during the warranty period...

Finance guy you encountered is a snake oil salesman....

Enjoy your new truck and I hope it provides many smiles per gallon for you for a very long time...

Best,
Phil

Thanks everyone. Yah in another car buying climate than what were in now i would have told the finance guy to shove it and watch the sales guy try to reel me back in or go somewhere else. All i wanted was the truck i had built exactly to my specs and waited extra patiently for. I did buy a Ford protect premium maint plan, basically covers all my basic maint for 5yrs but im having second thoughts and thinking about calling the sales manager and having them refund that mainly cause im still so pissed about the fear tactics they tried on me

How about dem old Dodge Rebellion commercials - "the dodge rebellion wants you". I could find a better use for her pumper skills .

This is my 3rd 2.3L. First was in our 2015 Mustang, We tuned it, wife put 87,89, whatever she could in it, went over on oil changes to 10k, forgot to do the air filter for 30k miles, flogged it every single time it was started, it was in Sport mode since the day it was born and even with allllll of that, It ran like new at 90K+ miles.

I blew up my 2nd 2.3L in my Focus RS, but who didn't LOL. That was self inflicted chasing the big numbers, amazing car. I used some rando online tuner that made big promises but, surprisingly, went missing when it went boom, in a drivethru of all places.

And now I am in the Ranger, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy another 2.3L vehicle tomorrow, even if its the last ICE vehicle I could buy, and tune it to the tits, and drive it for 150k miles. I view the Turbo's as a maintenance item, they aren't that expensive in the grand scheme of things. They cost less than a lift kit or a set of tires (Usually).

Exactly this. Turbo's may (or may not) be a problem, but with all the computer/electronic controlled components on today's vehicles, how long do you expect all that other stuff (aka "sh*t") to hold up? Try to get Billy Joe with the repair shop down the corner to fix any of it.
