You checked the fluid level with engine off? I thought it has to be on or fluid would flow out the dipstick hole?I decided to check my transmission fluid level today. Followed the process both at cold start for cold level curiosity as well as hot to see the delta. I had kevlar heat sleeves for my forearms and heat resistant gloves and you absolutely need those. I also had access to a lift, which I also recommend highly. I didn't take pics as I was focused on not burning myself.
My 21 Ranger has the dipstick numbered 1 thru 6. Hot fluid level is supposed to be between 5 and 6.
Cold level didn't even show on the dipstick (90 ish degrees Fahrenheit) which had me kinda worried, but I proceeded to the drive cycle to get the trans up to temperature to let the fluid expand. The specs say to check the fluid when the trans fluid temp is between 206 and 215 degrees Fahrenheit. I could only manage to get it to 193 and it never went over that. Went through the gears again following process and back on the lift it went. Fluid was exactly on 5 which is perfect. Anything more would technically be overfilled.
As a side note: Out of curiosity yesterday, I checked the fluid level with engine off just to see what the level was at. Trans temp was 143 degrees Fahrenheit at the time. Fluid was at the 1 on the dipstick.

Yes, engine off after sitting overnight and the fluid was 70 degrees. It came just above the hashed area on the dipstick, but didn't run out on mine.
Good to know...my trans has started exhibiting symtoms of low fluid...a few days ago, after pulling out of my garage driving off slowly, the trans went from 1st what felt like neutral...then bang into second...did this until the trans warmed up...today, it's worse...not sure where the fluid went as there's no leak...I just past 93K miles....going to check the level and see if it's even registering on the dip stick...
I only checked mine because after sitting overnight, I would start it and immediately put it in reverse only to find it took a few seconds for it to start moving. I added a picture here to note the level after being off overnight and the fluid level checked with engine off and the 70 degree fluid temp.

That was where the fluid level was after sitting overnight when I checked the fluid level without starting engine.
