i got a chance to drive a loaded up nissan titan pro-4x this past month. man that thing is a sweet truck to drive. loooove love that v8. the interior layout is a little quirky, and the capability numbers are lower than the competition. that said, it was probably more than enough truck for the overwhelming amount of US consumers. it just didn't sell well. bummer for nissan.

imagine if nissan lost their minds and after discontinuing the titan this summer they announced a "halo" model nissan frontier that had the titan 5.6L v8 in it. i imagine it'd still sell terribly, but the thought of it is delightful.
When it comes to the Titan, it has been a "Special" journey......

The first gen is ugly and a pain to work on..... The second gen I feel was a much better design.

The Cummins Diesel was a special bit of fun that should not have been done. Unfortunately Nissan decided to still go with it, but I think they realized the issue.

The updated 5.6(aka the VK56VD) is certainly nice. When compared to the VK56DE you get Direct Injection with the VVEL(Variable Valve Event Lift. This changes intake lift from 1 mm to 11 mm while running). These two certainly helped the Engine get the power that it has.

The Transmission is one id prefer not to have assuming it's an early design. I know the First gen and the Cummins had an Asian from Toyota and it was nothing but problems. The 9 speed might be a bit different

There is some stellar reading out there in the 8-speed lawsuit. GM knew that trans was a turd before they even launched it, but they went ahead full send and have been absolutely bleeding ever since.

The 'Gen 2' of it will probably be a solid unit, but they've just launched that in the last year or so.

And yes, the "8L's" are all GM, no Ford involvement with that one.

Unsealed Document List for the GM 8 Speed Lawsuiut:

For the LOL's, and don't think I'm picking on GM, I'm sure Ford has its share of internal communications that is just as cringe.

100% would take the garbage fuel economy, but amazing relatability of the 4.0 L put in XJs, and other Jeeps. Newer motors seem to be trying to hard to be something they aren’t.

*starts looking for used XJs on Autotrader* ?
OMG!!!! Many years ago bought a Jeep Cherokee. (MY '93 maybe???) Hurt my heart not being a Ford but Ford didn't have a comparable offering. It had the 4.0L. (Yes, it was blue.) To this day I still say that was one of the best engines in any vehicle that I've ever owned. 4.0L? Run that sucker 200K miles and don't even worry about it. At 300K maybe think about doing some more in depth maintenance. Then just keep on running it. Fantastic engine. Just fantastic.

The most bulletproof motor I’ve had in any vehicle - spanning Ford, Chevy, Audi, Jeep, Subaru, Honda. Yeah it was a unibody SUV, but I could abuse the hell out of it and it would just keep chugging along.

I don't care what manufacturer it is. If it has an Inline 6, then chances are it will last "FOREVER"!!!!!

it's sad that the i6 died in favor of sharing v6's with FWD designs; much better engines, but they won't fit under a hood sideways. :(

They also removed it from the Wrangler due to crash regulations.

Something about not wanting the engine occupying the passenger compartment during a crash.

When I got my TJ Wrangler I had always thought about going with a Magnum V8 swap if anything ever happened to the 4.0.

When I took it on my first trail ride with it, I put the trans in first and it idled everywhere.

Uphill, downhill, just effortlessly putted through it all (4.56 gears helps too).

Made me rethink a bit that if anything ever happens to that 4.0, it'll probably get another 4.0.

That's a case of "didn't want to redesign" rather than an actual limitation, IMO. The current wrangler has an engine compartment that would be a tight fit for a new i6, let alone the i6 plus crumple zone/drop out mount...but that's because they designed it around a v6/v8; they could have designed a longer engine compartment from the start, but decided not to.
