OK, I almost posted on another thread about this but I didn't want to hijack that discussion so I started one of my own. The other discussion was about how easily some people are accidentally putting their Rangers into 4High because of the location of the control.

Admittedly, I am a novice to the 4WD/AWD world. I never drove any vehicle with more than 2WD before 2015, when I got a Subaru Outback. Then, that became my Explorer in 2018. In neither vehicle have I ever needed to worry about changing the drive wheels because I'm almost always on paved roads and almost always in non-freezing conditions. The Ranger will be our first truck EVER! I want the Tremor package simply because I think it looks BA, not because I'm gonna go out with my son and his FJ and crawl over some rocks.

I know that the Ford website says if you have the FX4 or the Tremor package, you will have the Terrain Management System, which has four settings: Normal, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, and Sand. I believe that is the same as my current Explorer has. I have a few questions about this.

First, is this just designed for people like me who don't know what the hell we're doing to change the 4H/4L/2H settings (see title above)?

If so, great. If not, then is there a SEPARATE controller for the drive line?

Finally, I've done a little reading about this subject so as not to be so ignorant, but if any of you long-timers have any assistance you'd like to offer, I'm all ears!

Thanks.

I live in St Lucie west, close by. I have a FX4 Lariat. If you want, pm me and come over and drive it and play with the various modes. I'm not smart enough to explain them all without my 4wd training aid.

I took the Ranger to an off road park this weekend and never switched into 4WD during my time in the park terrain. I just simply used the K.I.S.S method. Unless I'm stuck, 4WD is not needed.

That sounds like my kind of experience! Thanks!
