I have seen people argue in past posts while searching the forums, mainly from the very early days, about whether the ranger comes with a limited slip or not. I was hoping 2 years later we may have a definitive answer.

For perspective, I want to buy a 2021 stx 4x4. The rear locker is overkill for my needs but I have been driving a 2 wheel drive truck with an LSD for 3 years and have become a big fan of it.

I have a 2021. How would I test this?

If I remember right you can jack up the rear end and spin one tire by hand, if the other tire spins at about the same speed it has a limited slip. I was hoping by now though it would be common knowledge whether they have them or not.

If you lift the rear end and spin one tire and the other goes the opposite way it is NOT LS. If it goes the same direction it is LS.

I'm not sure if that's right - unless my memory is wrong. My 2016 Mustang (which is now a time trial car) has a Torsen LS differential and the wheels spun opposite directions. But I could be wrong...

For the 2019 and up Ranger there has yet to be a limited slip differential from the factory and to my knowledge I do not belive the aftermarket has come out with any yet.

With that said my 2019 does not have a locker in it and for the most part it does just fine. The locker is ONLY used for Offroad as needed.

I plan on doing light offroading. I enjoy the LSD because its a no thought solution. One tire slips, the other starts to turn. I just gotta worry about throttle.

But I have been told an LSD on a 2wd is just the poor man's 4x4. Im sure I'd be okay.

If you want to go offroad then do yourself a favor and get a 4x4. It will make things a better experience overall.

Just to give some insight, I ran TrueTrac LSDs in front and rear of my Jeep XJ. It would crawl over just about anything; i rarely used my winch. Brake and throttle control were my best friends. My TJ had OX lockers and yes, they were better in the hardcore stuff, but i dont' do that anymore.

My buddy's Comanche was 2wd with a LSD and was quite capable. THere were spots where the front axle could help pull over and obstacle, but he did keep up fine. For light trails and fireroads, LSD is fine.

I can tell you if you punch my '19 with traction off, i do a nice one wheel squeal.

Well shoot... I guess I'll just have to come up with another reason to drink a PBR.

It’s open from the factory, but it does behave pretty well like an lsd. If you’re able to, you can park with the fronts on pavement and the rears on grass and if you give it a bit of brake torque it will spin both back tires even if one is unloaded( like on a jack off the ground entirely) I had some pictures in another thread of my tire tracks on grass, and I did the same thing on snow and ice and it was the same without the locker engaged.
The locker is 100% though and is pretty cheap overall, though mine tends to induce bone jarring axle wrap when I have it on and I get any tire slip.
