Hi everyone,
New to the site (although I’ve been lurking for a while) and also the new owner to a 2019 XLT. 33k miles, excited to join the community

I’m having an issue that I hope someone might be able to identify, I’ve read a few similar posts on the site but this seems slightly different.

The past few mornings (30-40 degrees Fahrenheit) when I start up I’m greeted with an unpleasant whine coming from the engine compartment. Almost like something is spinning and making contact. Attached video below.

It will usually taper off after 10 minutes of driving. If I just let the truck run idle the sound remains. If I start the truck say an hour later after driving, it sounds fine.

The noise will match my acceleration and sputter out and back in before it settles for good. Sometimes when coasting then returns as I accelerate. If I shift into neutral at a stop the sound remains.

Has anyone seen or heard something like this? I don’t see any obvious contact points near fan / belts. Hard to duplicate this noise, some afternoons it’ll start fine no noise at all.

Thanks for your Insight

Chris

One thing to also consider is that in colder temperatures on cold startup the engine van will make a loud noise as it is engaged for a short bit until whatever temperature or conditions the truck has pre-programmed into the PCM

Love how these engines perform, not how they sound. It's really tough to tell with a recording, but it may be normal.

Yea it’s definitely more prevalent with a cold start, also sounds to be near In the fan. Thanks for the info

When I first got mine I thought there was a sewing machine under the hood. Now, I'm replacing the Ford emblem on my engine cover with this.

Well, yup, our engines make noise, you should near my Subaru. The
fuel pump sounds like crickets! It did not make this sound when there was no ethanol but the gubbemint, well, they decided to
legislate all gas need ethanol starting in 2023.

get yourself a mechanics stethescope and start poking around where you think the noise is coming from and move out from there.
You should be able to pinpoint more and find out if its a failing part or a normal sound for that part. or some fancy ventriloquist joke and it's really the tailgate damper failing.

Plus, we need to sticky a chart on what a sound sounds like.
To me that's not a whine, at least what we hear prevalent in the video.

Hah yes that sticky would be nice, thanks for the info. I'll do some more poking around this evening.
