2019 Ranger Intermittent No-Crank, Multiple Modules offline

I’m looking for help diagnosing an intermittent electrical issue with my 2019 Ranger.


The problem began after I returned the truck from a 91-octane tune to a 87-octane tune, but im notnsure this is the issue. It drove normally for approximately 300 km, then the ABS, traction-control, airbag and brake warning lights came on. I drove it home, shut it off, and afterward it would not crank with the key. I could hear one electronic click, but boosting the battery made no difference. The battery measured approximately 12.4 volts.

It's worth noting i drove through some of the worst rain I've seen in my 14 years of driving. Im suspecting this to be a water intrusion/bad ground/short.

Strangely, the truck would start using remote start. when I inserted and turned the key as it promts you too, i could then shift into drive and the truck would move but all lights stayed on the dash. I also received code P0630, although the VIN displayed by the scan tool matched the truck.


The modules/systems that were offline or showing faults included:


  • ABS
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring/BLIS

I took it into ford and the shop initially suspected the gateway module. They have not replaced anything yet, but after performing diagnostics and 800$ later and no parts replaced, the truck now starts normally with the key and the warning lights have disappeared. Maybe what it was dried out over the 3 days it was at the shop for? Im not sure but its my best guess


I have since discovered that both licence-plate bulbs failed around the same time. Both lamp sockets and wiring were wet, and the contacts appear to have shorted or overheated. The licence-plate lights use Yellow/Violet power wires and share rear ground point G401 with the BLIS modules.


Could water intrusion or a short in the licence-plate lamp circuit—or damage around G401 or the rear wiring harness—cause these modules to go offline and create the intermittent no-crank condition? I’m particularly interested in which connectors, grounds and BCM circuits I should test before replacing the gateway module.

I've also attached a list of all the codes the truck was throwing when all the modules were offline.

I would look along the inside frame rail, couple of bulk connectors on the drivers side (I think driver side)and see if water got in.

Do not replace the - GWM at this point with the wet harness and burned connectors - this is the source.
All the modules listed on your post are all on the - HS1 - Can Bus, now indirectly the short created by the water ingress - shorted the Can Bus Circuit and it lost the ability to communicate (Data Transmission)
Power is sent to the Plate Lights - Via the BCM and is FET (Protected) the Ground G401 is the shared ground for the (Reverse Lights) - *If Blind Spot Equipped

The BCM is on the HS1 Can Bus and the BCM is the master module for engine starting, so since you were able to remote start via the (TCU - HS-4 Bus) then HS-1 was only partially dead and was able to see the start request (authorize it)

We have 3 possible sources for the melted connectors

The Plate Light Connectors - one or both shorted (water ingress)
C405 - Feeds the rear lighting - water ingress
C408 - Feeds the rear lighting as well but also includes (MS-CAN) bus wiring and the short (water ingress) could have fed over to the MS-Can bus and bled over into HS1 via the GWM.
Note: since nothing appeared to fault on the MS-Can bus, this is just a possible and worth checking.

Replace both License Plate - Pigtails - PN: WPT-1201
and check both of these connectors

C405 & C408 - for any moisture or corroded pins

In addition to checking for water intrusion and corrosion in the wiring connectors under the truck, I would also check both taillights for water inside. I would remove the taillights and remove the BLISS modules from each light housing and check for water or corrosion on the BLISS modules and inside the wiring connections to the taillights and Bliss modules.
