Hello
I am currently looking used 2019 and a few left over 2020 units. When I do purchase it will be a 4x4 unit . Most of the trucks I have seen do not include the tow package. Other than the obvious receiver hitch and wiring harness if I buy a unit without the tow package what else am I missing? My towing includes a utility trailer about 1500-2000 lbs About once twice a year I would pulling a car dolly with mid size car and a car trailer on occasion at about 4000-5000 lbs.
Should I just buy and add the hitch and wiring?

Any thoughts from the folks that tow with these trucks? Thanks John

Adding OEM or third party hitch receiver is no problem. If you don't have electric trailer brakes that's all you need. If you do have electric brakes you'll also need the 7 pin socket. There are threads for adding these on this site. That's all that's on the tow package.

Hi John,

There are several threads that cover this topic...You can order the Ford hitch and wiring, a relative simple job...or there are a couple aftermarket options but the hitch rating is about 1500 lbs lower than Ford. Use the search function to seek out the details.

Thanks for the quick reply. I looked at Ford info but was very vague. I was not sure if you got different gearing and or trans cooler . I am currently driving a F150 with a tow package. That option on F150 does change up standard equipment.

Thanks Again

John, I'm pretty sure you've already covered this in your previous tows but I wanted to make sure you didn't run into the same issue I did when I got my Explorer. I thought 5000 pounds would be plenty of capacity, since my towed car only weighed about 3300 pounds. Little did I know that the car hauler I was planning to rent from Uhaul was 2200 pounds!!! I ended up having to go buy my own car hauler (1500 pounds) just to keep myself legal and safe. Big mistake on my part, but at least there was a solution.

I only bring this up in case you decide to go aftermarket and (as Phil noted) end up with a lesser rated hitch. Good luck with finding your best solution! Let us know what you end up with.

You have a few options. The Curt hitch is rated for 6000#, you would have to find the 7way harness if you wanted to tow anything with brakes.

I would ask the dealer if they could add the factory tow options as a condition of the sale. Most likely they will want to move a 2019 or 2020 enough that they will do it.

Other than the wiring, and the integrated hitch bumper for 7500# there are no differences whatsoever in the physical vehicle.

These days the F150 doesn't do a different cooler on the 10 speed transmission either, and the ranger can hit max tow with the standard gearing. Probably we hit the limit on the frame/suspension before the drivetrain runs out.
