lets give this a shiv. every generation in one way or other lives off of the fruits of the one that came ahead of it. sure things have changed in the economy. in general it has been going to crap for decades. being a grumpy old fart or a pissy lil bitch is not helping things improve. at one point in America the dream included the idea of kids having it better than parents. in many ways they do. in terms of money and economy the younger folks got hosed. who is at fault for this we may ask. i know the answer, but no one here would like it lol. if you piss in your fart sack you still have to sleep in it. you are most welcome.

I am not perfect by any means....but I am also not out in the world "making a difference" like I truly believe I should be - why? I don't know.
pass on the love you have for the 2nd amendment and you will be making a positive difference .

I made this mistake in Japan a few years back sort of. Naturally I had no cell service or wifi so my translator app did not work.

I had no way to explain that the money I left on the table was to pay for my beers and was not a tip so they basically shoved the cash into my pocket and made me leave.
Same in China, I personally loved knowing the exact price of things and not worrying about tipping.

If I ever push for a doctorate in HR (masters complete), I am quoting/using this thread in my thesis.

Think the biggest difference between the different generations mentioned in this thread is, the older group had to make sound choices to survive as there was no privilege or safety nets really. You lived by your choices good or bad. Screw up and you starve or were homeless. Today, you make the wrong choices you “deserve” to be bailed out. I’m entitled to a free education or healthcare. There is zero responsibility taught in schools today.
And when we finally made it, the hippies had got there first and ruined it for everybody...
Long haired freaky people definitely apply now! ?

I think I'm not out in the world do what I think needs to be done cause I can't do it myself. There are lots of people but no one has any balls to stand up for what's right. Which is exactly what we need. If more people stand together against the Bullshit (being over taxed - just an example) I think we could make a difference - but to many people are scared of what might happen to them if they stood up. It's really a shame - because if we got together we could make a change

today you also have platforms to beg for money online and not on the street.
seems everyone who has a financial issue, heads to go-fund-me and begs for strangers, family and friends to bail them out of their plight.
And just like a stray dog if you don't feed them they'll go away. We have panhandlers here at every entrance/exit ramp holding signs begging for money. It still amazes me how many people give money to them when most (not all) are to lazy to get a job. I was getting off the ramp and saw one walking towards In N Out burger and followed them there. You guess it they got into a nice BMW and drove away. It's to bad because these are the ones who ruin it for those who really are down on their luck.

The old man 'bootstrap puller' claims fall flat against empirical data.

Average wages to living costs ratio was empirically better when Boomers came of age.

The State subsidized more of the public college costs, and was therefore cheaper.

Minimum wage, if adjusted for inflation is over $20 in today's dollar.

Average salary for both blue collar and college graduates purchased more real estate in the Boomers' working years (and before). Empirical, no room for nonsense opinions.

Anecdotal is not nearly as worthwhile, but here's mine. My grandfather came back from WWII and worked as a line technician for Bell Telephone. Grandmother was a part time school bus driver. On those wages (and benefits, and later pension), they had two cars in the driveway, nice middle class home, occasional vacation, all needs met, bought lakefront property (now super exclusive area), saved for comfortable retirement, paid for golf club memberships and cruises during their retirement until they died 10 yrs ago.

My parents had a reasonable mortgage on a nice house on a policeman's salary. Mom stayed home, then worked part and later full time. All needs met, they retired in their very early 50's (lucky bastards) comfortably on pension and sizeable 401k. Try that today. No can do.

My contractor-grade not fancy house in a not fancy neighborhood is currently worth over a half-million. I paid half that. Own it outright now, thank god. What combined salary do you need to afford that, raise kids, etc? Well, young folks aren't saving that usual 20% down - $100,000 - to purchase at today's rates. If fully financed, a half mill house requires a mortgage of $2800. Then add property tax and insurance. Roughly $3500/month for housing, not counting utilities. $1200/month gets you a sketchy one bedroom apt. My mortgage on 1850 sq' was a little over $1200.

Costs have outpaced salary across the board. Young people have it harder, financially. Any disenting opinion is hot air.
All true.

But for some reason, the younger generations don't seem to want to do the work to make the money.

Hold on for some anecdotal evidence here.

I train new hires at work. "Entry level" in my division starts at roughly $70k a year. The ONLY requirements are a clean MVR and being over 21. Many of the 20 and 30 somethings we get in will be lucky to ever make that much in a year at another job EVER, in their whole life, let alone now. It's mentally easy work, but physically demanding. Long story short, the vast majority of them don't make it. They literally don't have the drive and or work ethic to do the work.

Now is that the effect of the older generation's wealth, and them not teaching the younger generation to take care of themselves? Perhaps. But while the younger generation may face a more difficult time financially, they certainly aren't going out and getting what little is there for them.

As a Gen Xer I'm glad we're mostly left out of these arguments. We're used to being forgotten about, but we're also used to taking care of ourselves.

Imagine a millennial thinking they are a genius because they can use devices designed by boomers to be easy to use. LOLZ...

<Serious moment> The cell phone and the computer were invented and developed by boomers. We (except when we are just kidding around) should stop putting people in boxes according to their "age group" or generation. Millennials have have their sub-divisions, and so do boomers... </Serious moment>

You may continue...
