“Swooshing” or sucking for air while accelerating?

Hey everyone,

I’ve had my Ranger a few months now , and I wanted to ask a question regarding accelerating , particularly the first acceleration after a start up — I’m experiencing either loud fan blowing noise or it’s sucking for air .. I’m not a mechanic so I apologize .
It seems to coincide with a loss of acceleration power as well. Is this normal ? I’ve never experienced this with any past vehicles . Once I stop again and accelerate, it’s gone. Only the first time.. so weird . Any explanations?

Rob its normal, it is just the clutch fan.

Ok thank you for that reply . Some of the sounds this truck makes is concerning because some aren’t consistent. Have you had any issues with a sound that turned out to be a problem with the new Ranger?

These things seem to make a lot of noise. And not awesome noise like a truck that most people are used to. The engines are buzzy (direct injection) and then there is the fan noise you described. I for one, for some dumb reason, like the fan noise. It reminds me of the big International my dad drove for work, or my buddy's straight 6 Jeep Cherokee in college.

Have you experienced a high frequency buzz for a quick second after start up? (Not the fuel injection noise) . This sounds like it’s coming from underneath vehicle .

Yep!
Also noises from around the engine bay when I unlock my doors. LOL.

Yep...Open the door and the fuel pump runs to charge up the fuel system in anticipation of you starting the Ranger. Seems to be with either of the front doors on the Screw. Do not know about the back as my hearing is compromised (Blessing?)....way too many screaming IndyCar engines over a 22 year time spent as a trackside official.... At Ford, I was a NVH Technical specialist (management salary roll) but had to quit when I flagged myself with hearing loss and tested as moderately damaged. Wife says it is in her speech frequency range....um...maybe

Rob,my 17 Taco with direct injection is just as noisy or more than my Ranger. Bret

that is a wierd sound --- its kinda like an airplane taking off! wonder why it does that when you first start off - the engine is cold so why the extra Burst of air? I also have random sounds -- buzzing while the truck is just sitting in the garage, similar to the ones that happen when you open the door at random times. I ve just learned to get comfortable and ignore it and assume its normal and that ford knows what they're doing! enjoy your new ride! I love mine, just going on about 1800 miles now and hoping for many more!

I have tried to get used to it..I don't particularly care for it though. My daughter says it reminds her of being on the Batman Ride at Six Flags

still wonder why it does it when its first started and cold, why full fan then? but if everyone is posting about it, I guess I don't need to ask about it when I go in for my first service like I was planning to do. And why not electric fans in the First place? just one of those things it seems like could be different.

Hi Andrew,

There is another thread that explains this, but it is called Morning Sickness. Overnight the silicone fluid drains down to the bottom of the fan clutch, and locks the fan in the engaged position. There is also an electric connection to engage and disengage the fan, but this morning sickness goes away when the fan is spun at moderate revs.

This is the best explanation I could find with a quick search. It has to do with the fluid and the valves in the clutch.

"This is normal operation. What happens is that the fluid in the fan clutch goes back into the center of the clutch at rest and the valves close up because it's cool. When you cold start the truck, the fan needs a difference of RPM between the shaft and fan for it to push the valves open in conjunction with the engine getting warm. Because it's stiff when it's cold, it takes some time for the clutch to disengage and the sound you hear is the fan pulling tons of air through the radiator at higher RPM. Once the clutch disengages and cycles at operating temp, you are less likely to hear the fan again. "

I have a feeling it has to do with keeping it more "truck like" and possibly "more reliable". I agree though that an electric option might have been better from the get-go. I wonder if any aftermarket companies are working on one?
