Cool map, plenty in our area of travels. I've read lots of stories, all negative, on flock cameras. Not sure what's true, what is speculation, and what is consperacy theory.

There are a lot of great videos, some from lawyers. Basically, Flock is using plate recognition and pairing it with identifying features (stickers, body damage, etc) to create your profile. Then they track you everywhere and provide a searchable database for anyone who pays for it. Police departments and government agencies are using this to bypass warrants. It's a legal gray area, for now. Linked below is a good video to get you started.

Reminds me of the story about "The sky is falling..." In my area, Flock has helped in the recovery of stolen vehicles and helped track vehicles involved in hit and run instances among others. When I am on a public street, I have no expectation of any privacy with all the dash cams, Flocks, cams on private and public buildings, cameras on the freeways and public streets, etc. I support my police department efforts to reduce crime. The police department says (and I have no reason to doubt them) that Flock results that don't result in a criminal investigation are deleted after about 30 days. I have more important things to worry about than a camera reading my license plate on a public street.

Watch the video I posted. He addresses “expectation of privacy”. What flock is doing is building a profile on you, that’s not privacy. That’s tracking your every movement and making record and that was ruled unconstitutional.

You’re essentially saying you’re willing to give up your rights because it might catch a few bad people. I, on the other hand, am not willing to give my rights up for anything.

As a staunch conservative, I do not willingly give up any of my rights as guaranteed by the Constitution. I just don't believe all the hype over the Flock system.

It’s not what the police do with them that has a lot of people concerned, it’s what anyone who is willing to pay for the data they collect does with them. For example, I don’t mind that local PD and sheriff departments use them to track license plates, ID vehicles that are stolen, find people who have warrants, expired registration, etc….

What I don’t like is that they not only take a physical description of your vehicle, but anyone inside of it, their physical appearance, apparent age, location, time of day, and travel routines. Anyone willing to pay FLOCK for that information can have it. So now some weirdo knows what I drive, what I look like, what my wife and daughter look like, and they know what areas of town we frequent at what times of day. Call me paranoid but I don’t like someone being able to digitally stalk me and my family.

Now before you call me a “conspiracy theorist”, you should know that I work for the government. The department I work for installs these cameras around the city for PD. We’ve talked to FLOCK software people and we know EXACTLY what these cameras can (and will) do if someone is willing to pay for the data on them. It’s not just for “public safety” like you’re being told. There’s a massive potential for private and personal information to be leaked and given to people who definitely shouldn’t have it.

That’s why people are pushing against these things so much. Never forget what Reagan said "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the Government and I'm here to help."

I’ll add to this… As a government employee, I can tell you the government is absolutely, without a doubt, not here to help you. I have family and very close friends that are military, law-enforcement, and first responders. I used to be as pro law-enforcement as they come. After working in a department that is very closely tied with PD, FBI, homeland security, IRS, and other various government agencies; all I can say is never fool yourself into thinking the government is here to help you.

There are things that I can’t disclose (due to contract obligations and NDA’s) but I can definitely tell you that when the government, even local agencies, say they’re doing something for “public safety” or “to help you”, you shouldn’t believe a word of it. 99% of the time, there’s some kind of gain to be had from whatever they’re doing. Whether it’s financial, surveillance, power, money, etc… it’s always something. They’re never just doing something out of the kindness of their hearts and trying to help you.

This is also why my political stance has changed since I started working for the government. I don’t trust anyone. I’ve seen what they do and I’ve seen the corruption firsthand. All government agencies, I don’t care who they are, are corrupt and shady. If you think they’re here to help you, you’re believing the lies they’re selling.
