The house I had just sold I had installed a whole house generator (IIRC it was 8Kw) with an auto transfer switch. It ran all the essentials except the central ac unit which wasn't a big deal as we rarely lost power in the summer and I had a spare window unit just in case. I was on 3 acres with 250' of driveway and my neighbor (who was one of my best friends) who had all the heavy equipment so he could dig me out if needed.

I thought being retired winters wouldn't bother me anymore but I realized fast last winter being in Arkansas how much I really hated them. Single digits, snow and a dirty truck just didn't do well with me or Annie so we decided AZ was a better fit for us. No natural disasters to deal with and where we are it doesn't get as hot (3,000') as where we were before and it actually cools off at night. :tumbleweed:
Being born and raised in central Pennsylvania (don’t tell anyone), I was used to to and kinda liked winter, kinda. However, when I joined the USN in 1972 and was stationed in Norfolk, I realized there is more to winter than waist deep fluffy precipitation. When I got out, it was right amidst thousands of layoffs and reductions in the workforce, no jobs to be had up there. So because of that, well and I began to hate winter after being in Norfolk for four years, I got married and we decided to move south. Stumbled into an awesome career in nuclear power plant maintenance and management which led to an awesome retirement. I could even do with a little less cold than here in SE Virginia but I’m too old to move now. We had five inches of the fluffiness a few weeks ago but it went away in a day or two. So I guess I’ll keep the old shack for a few more years.

A freak storm came through here about 15 years ago and we lost power for 13 1/2 days. Ice crashing limbs down over the primaries. You can’t let a fifty foot tree grow next to a twenty five foot power line. But I’m ready now, got a 20kw generator that hooks up to the PTO on my Kubota diesel tractor. Bring it on.

Now, I just need a big ol’ generator. Preferably NG since the line is beside that plug receptacle.

Look into the Generac which Home Depot there should carry them. I know just recently they were offering a free 5 year extended warranty with them. It will all depend how much you'll want to run and as you know the ac & furnace will be your biggest draw. Mine was just enough to run the furnace but it was an oil fired base board radiant heat so it didn't take much. Now I think they start at 10,000W and go up to 26,000W. 22,000W should run everything there for you but IIRC you're not really there most of the summer so you might be able to get by with the 10,000W unit.
