I had this problem with my rear defrost. Check if the grid lines across the window are peeling off. In my case they were and I was able to patch them with Frost Fighter 2120 defroster repair kit. It's held up so far about 6 months so I can't speak for the long term, but it seems more robust than what ford painted on the window initially.

like 1/4 of my grid lines are flaked off and the entire passenger side where the connector contacts the rear grid is flaked off with the connector just dangling. my rear defrost doesn't work at all. i've been told it's beyond fixing. there are a few products out there to try, but the main one i know is permatex. several threads about it on here. permatex's product seems a bit janky, and isn't really designed for the broad repair area i need.

i fear i might just need to replace the rear window with a new heating grid...

How much are they quoting? I just discovered
mine not heating in the middle section that opens. Checked it out and sure thing one of the 9 volt battery like tabs under rubber "protective plug" broke off. As far as I know the fix according to ssm 48490 is total window replacement. Just a little perturbed as the truck is only 3 years old and just left warranty less than a month ago. This was not caused by any negligence on my part. Imo very poor engineering and bad craftsmanship. Makes you want to buy another Ford...

I had my rear window replaced last October. The rear defrost was beyond repair. I think it was around $400 from Safelite. Afterward I realized I could have gotten it cheaper with a lesser known company.

I've got the sliding rear window+defroster and if I had to replace it I'd get the non-slider w/defrost. I don't think I've opened the window except to see if it worked but once.

I agree, it's pretty useless if it's not electric. You can see better out of the solid window anyway.

I've had sliding rear windows in most of my trucks for the last 20+ years and only used them one time. I was getting a load of crown moulding in my F150 for my house and had to open the sliding window to slide them through to rest on the dashboard. lol Other then that I've never used them and they're useless unless powered.

Plus, they're easy to break into. I locked my keys in one of my F150's on the job site and went back into the house we were working on, grabbed my 5 in 1 putty knife and had it open in under a minute. Good thing I had a damper because my skinny ass could fit through the window and unlock the door. 😆
