I am thinking it's just a simple bad connection between the BMFL and starter, since the starter relay was energizing. Possibly the starter itself
But did you by chance - spray the engine bay down- During the wash?

No sir.
Ran it through the car wash. And as far as I can tell it doesn't spray under the cars.

Ford has it now, so we get to wait. Brakes Plus tech (very skinny guy) crawled under the truck and saw nothing amiss, he said. Truly hoping it's something as "simple" as a bad starter...bolt-on fix, maybe?

Hear ye, hear ye, @all R5G members. Tomorrow evening, in solidarity with our fallen comrade, @ChrisM , light thine headlights, taillights, ditch lights and all other lights for 5 minutes at 5:55 pm (your local time) as we hold a rotating "candle" light vigil in his honour.

Mark my words, @Msfitoy will have UFOs circling his block and hovering over his house.

Or a weak battery / poor charging system (for whatever reason)...

Here is hoping that your problem is something simple.

You might want to invest in one of these. (ScanGauge 3)

SG at Idle after 75 mile trip (55mph) .webp

I setup it up specifically for 5G Ranger problem areas - Charging System / Battery, and Transmission.

I wanted Oil Pressure too because every vehicle should have a real oil pressure gauge.

Real time measurements are nice to have.

Battery State of Charge, Voltage, and Amp will generally warn you well before the battery fails.
Even with most bells, whistles, lights minimized, and Telematics unplugged, I still see my battery SOC fall from 99% to 88% over 3 days. Worse is that I can find no pattern to the power draws. It previously dropped from 100% to 97% in 2 days.

And BMS usually charges the battery at a much higher amperage than the 1 amp shown in the picture. I was previously seeing 10-13 amps when at SOC of 80%-90% with amps gradually tapering down to 1 at 99% and 0 at 100%.

There are a lot of unknowns going on within BMS (The BMS sensor is plugged in with SOC set to 100%, and ASS turned off with Forscan).

Now on to the transmission monitors.
  • Gears shows what gear you are in. Neutral show as up 70 for some reason. When in Neutral / Park you typically see the above TC Slip & TC Slip Desired numbers.
  • Stopping In Drive results in TC Slip Desired at 1023 and TC Slip climbing to between 500 and 1100, depending on the grade, and trans temps rising rather quickly.
  • But I can cruise all day at 180F -185F with both TC Slip and TC Slip Desired readings at or near 0.

Since the starter grunted, it sounds like a loose or corroded battery cable connection, or bad connection to the starter.
Connections to the battery looked fine to me and the tech. No corrosion or looseness topside. At the starter end, though, I cannot say.

Did you have ASS active during it's lifetime? I'm thinking starter bad.
Not at all. Pushing the ASS button is part of my pre-flight ritual. I hate that particular function.
