If I'm not mistaken this change might be related to a recent change Google had to make over in the UK or Europe.

Why not an actual GPS?
GPS: $200+, map updates when they decide to release them, another device hanging out on the dash or windshield and has to be put away when parked to discourage break ins. Connect to phone hotspot for traffic. Takes up another power port.

Waze/Google Maps: $0 Use an existing screen and constantly updated. Plug and play.

Yeah! have a GPS, but the only thing I use it for is the built-in dash cam, which may get upgraded this year for a stand alone dash cam. (BTW, the map updates on the Garmin GPS /dashcam are free.)

Free it may be but if it is like the Garmin updates on our '16 Pilot, it wont do it over the air. I would only consider a stand alone GPS if I was doing serious wilderness type off-roading. Otherwise, the built in android auto is great. Google maps just WORKS, shows me traffic very reliably and tells me where people reported police. Waze I do not care for but pick your poison. GPS units are a bit out dated for city use IMO.

Yes a GPS.can cost a bit. The one I have cost $1299(and it is a powerful unit meant for a specific purpose) and quite frankly is very nice. Even a more basic unit that is closer to the $200 is still going to be nicer than Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

Map updates are FREE with Garmin at least. Can't speak for other Brands.

Does it really have to be put away? If anything you might already have that figured out anyway, so no big deal.

Not sure what you mean by connect to phone hotspot for Traffic Updates. At least with Garmin if the GPS has Traffic Capability, you do not need to connect to your phone at all for Traffic. The Garmin Overlander and Tread Overland pick it up quickly and have no problems rerouting as needed.

The power port only gets taken up if you use it like such. There are power adapters that will allow you to get power elsewhere and not have another cord hanging and taking up the power port.

Here is said GPS that cost me $1299

Can't speak for the Garmin in your Honda, but I can say that a few of the Garmin GPS Devices that have WIFI Capabilities can do an update without connecting directly to the Computer at Home.

As for your general reasoning, I agree and disagree. If you end up leaving an area that you had cell service and now are without, you can easily loose the map if you simply switch over to something else on the dash for a moment. I know because I did it often in my Ranger. Part of why I like the Stand Alone GPS. Android Auto and Apple Car Play rely way too much on Cell Service to work correctly.

I usually only update it when I bring it in to download something I recorded on the dashcam. I get none of those features you mentioned in Google Maps, which is why I mainly use Waze now.

Funny enough I guess it's not a big deal for many people. Vegas keeps exploding with construction so it's useful to download every now n then. I do like the Garmin navigation though over Ford's. I just use Android auto. The Ranger nav came in handy in Utah when we had no reception outside of town.

Yup, built in Ranger nav helped us without reception on our android. I think a standalone Garmin would be great for off-road purposes but otherwise, for me the two I have built into the truck work well (AA and Ford nav).

I would trust the Ford Nav over Android Auto and Apple Car Play. Thanks to having Factory Nav and Sirius XM Capability(not saying you actually use it though), you can get Sirius XM Traffic. I used it a few years back in a Nissan Sentra and it worked very well and had no problems rerouting as needed for traffic. Yes the subscription is $3.99 a month, but a small price to pay for a feature that works very well without Cell Service.

I didn't even know that was a thing. It integrates with Ford nav or?

The Sirius XM Traffic integrates with the Factory Navigation. It is a separate service from the Sirius XM Radio alone. Contact Sirius XM for more on that. You can give them the VIN or the Radio ID for them to verify

FWIW, my 15 Mustang with My Ford touch, 17 Mustang with Sync3 and my 21 Ranger with Sync3 all came with a 5 year subscription to SirusXM Travel Link.

I normally use the built in Ford nav but today I had an occasion to use Android Auto and as soon as I got on the highway I got a notice of a cop ahead and was allowed to confirm he was still there or not. The notice said it came from Waze. My cell phone is a Motorola RAZR+ 2023 with Android 15.

Ok, quick report and will post settings and images soon. AAWireless Two is a wireless android auto device, probably the most credible out there it seems but what drew me to it was the custom DPI settings. Sure enough, increasing the DPI enabled the incident reporting but best part is it basically made the screen look higher resolution, but still clear, not fuzzy.

Here is the Amazon link, $65, DPI settings in advanced menu.

Amazon.com: AAWireless Two - Android Auto Wireless Adapter - Convert Factory Wired Android Auto to Wireless - Multifunctional Button - Easy Plug and Play Setup - Seamlessly Connect Via Bluetooth - Made in Europe : Electronics

Update: DPI of 140 is a little smaller than stock but enables incident reporting. I had it at 125 yesterday which made things even smaller (more of the map showing).

Default value for stock DPI is 0 but if I had to try to manually duplicate stock, it is probably 150-160.

Google bought Waze a few years ago and has been in the process of integrating some of those features. I prefer the route choices of the Sync nav (Here We Go maps) but prefer those features on Google Maps.
