The turbo itself was probably fine. Most likely an actuator issue or linkage sticking? The fact that you had no performance problems really makes you wonder if they actually fixed anything.
Generally speaking, I trust this dealer not to give me a runaround. It's a small-town outfit with one store that has been in business for about 50 years. Looking under the hood, the turbo appears to have been replaced. If it really needed to be replaced is another question.

Not saying that they didn’t replace it. But questioning if they actually fixed something or threw parts at it because of the codes. Glad they got you taken care of.

Yep, I agree. I really like to know what's going on, and I like to ask questions. I was a little frustrated over my conversation with the service advisor. The shop loves feedback, so I'm going to suggest: bring the tech in to explain exactly what he found if the advisor can't be more specific.
If the wastegate actuator is the failure point, I want to know that in case the situation crops up again when the truck is out of warranty.

Joining this thread a bit late but thought I would document my CEL and symptoms. As of today, I am scheduled for a new turbo assembly in 19 days at the dealer.

The backstory: 2019 Ranger with 81k miles and I am the original owner. Stock everything except Fox 2.0 lift that I bolted on. Oil change intervals were at 4k miles for the first two, then oil changes between 5-6k with only one interval going to 7k. It's a work truck and I drive in dusty environments, often using 4WD on the job. I insisted the dealer replace and flush the AT fluid at 65k with some pushback, but after he did it, said it was a great call for it was definitely time considering the looks of the fluid. Also, I replace my fluids (especially rear diff.) much sooner than probably any other user out there. I tend to my air filter regularly and don't drive like an idiot. But, I do live in an extremely cold environment.

Nine days ago I got the powertrain warning light (orange wrench) but no power loss. The next day I got the same plus CEL then got a noticeable power loss going up a mountain pass. Luckily the app tells you some codes in plain english and it alluded to a stuck valve in the turbo. Then I drove it a couple more days since then with only the CEL coming on and no other power loss.

Today I got it into the dealer and they told me I needed a whole new turbo assembly because the waste gate was getting stuck. So I won't drive it until my replacement, but here is the kicker: the extended warranty ran out at 75k and it's at 81k now! Ugh.

I paid for the parts that were ordered today at $2175.21 and that included the diagnosis. Labor for the turbo swap is expected to be $1590.75 :crying:

Sounds somewhat similar to my situation except that I'm not at altititude so the weak turbo didn't manifest as much.

Man, I would get a second estimate from an independent who works on Fords. It ain't rocket surgery to replace a turbo. Bet you can get that labor cost down considerably.

A stuck or sticking waste gate can be several different things. Sticking or stuck external linkage from actuator to waste gate arm on exhaust housing. Actuator malfunctioning. Wastegate internal issues ( rust, carbon, wear or cracks in seat area). But the dealer sees a code it tells them to replace the turbo. No effort was made to see what the actual specific issue was. Might possibly be a simple fix. Sad.
