to the OP, yeah if you think your son is probably more of an impreza driver, for whatever reason, then stick to that. it's not the the WRX is an unsafe car. it's just so confidence inspiring that it encourages people to drive beyond their limits. while the WRX has a reputation for being a boy-racer vehicle, it's probably a perfect vehicle for folks in their 30s-40s. that's purely my opinion tho.
I was mainly referring to his budget and most of it going towards the insurance if he goes WRX , I'd be the one having to go out and clear the cobwebs, I can't even get him to floor the Ranger!

Because you're in there with him ?

Let him get that WRX out on an empty road by himself.

The siren song of that boost will be singing VERY loudly.

I've been there, and it is indeed a beautiful and compelling song.

took the words right out of my mouth. i was sitting there thinking, "one does not simply resist the drug that is the WRX."

i think for even the most timid driver, once they feel what the WRX delivers there is an awakening.

This^

I've had plenty of fast cars.

But the violent launch of a full power AWD drop is something that absolutely BEGS repeating.

WRX = cop magnet ?‍♂ or if he is lucky?‍♀
That's not lucky, I find female cops much harder to talk down from a ticket to a warning. They always want to enforce the absolute letter of the law, no matter how unreasonable the application or circumstances.

Well he's tapping out on the WRX , he didn't believe the insurance "would be THAT bad" so he called them himself ... it's that bad...

Your post brought back memories of my beloved/hated turbo Rx7.

The problem, at least for me and I'm guessing LOTS more folks, with a car like the WRX is that there is SO MUCH you can do to them.

When I got my Rx7 I told myself that I would do intake and exhaust ONLY, no more.

A car like that WRX will respond to mods instantly, and it's like a meth addiction.

Too much is never enough.

@NotBudule2 , a used WRX is like a used hooker.

Regardless of how good it looks and sounds, you can bet it's been driven HARD.

Quick story:

I've rebuilt a few Subaru turbo engines so I know them decently well.

My nephew called me asking about picking up a "stock" WRX for a good deal.

I told him to assume that just because it's "stock" now doesn't mean it has always been stock and to be wary.

He bought it. Transmission grenaded in 2 months. Replaced transmission and head gasket blew.

Yeah, it was "stock" alright.
Is there such thing as an unused hooker?

This may be an "expectation versus reality " thing for him , he's thinks he's a WRX guy but I'm thinking an Impreza is his top rung ... RS's look pretty decent ?, insurance should be reasonable...
For years I was wandering when the RS insurance topic would come up on that forum how mine was so low next to everyone else's, even other NC members. I just figured they all had bad driving records, bad credit, or a combination of the two. Recently I went to use the recall check feature in my insurance app and the recall site reported an invalid VIN. Turns out the person that added the insurance entered it as a Focus ST chassis code. Somehow with the VIN on the policy not matching the VIN on my registration the automated system never caught it. I remember when I was adding the car it was likely one of the first few RSs to get insured with that company in the state and the person asked if it was an ST and I told them no, it the new RS. I guess the system was rejecting the correct VIN since they didn't know what the RS chassis code was, so they put it as an ST to force it into the system and likely figured it would get fixed shortly after, only it was like that for 7 years. When the car first released, I remember a lot of people were surprised by it being cheap to insure, but it was just a Focus to insurance at first, but that didn't last long with morons drifting into mountains and other traffic.

Especially now as this cold air kicks in. Those nightly runs were pure nirvana.

Glad there was an actual subi guy here to give the details. I was always a sucker for a sti from the late 90s. A focus RS would be my modern replacement for that dumbfuckery style of driving.
I will go to my grave regretting not buying a new RS.

My STi was more to insure than a Corvette. I tune a lot of Subaru's and they can be fun cars, as long as you can keep mods within reason. There is a cult following with them... Annoyingly to me. The new WRX's can be made to be pretty fast with a couple bolt-ons and a tune, and they are more reliable than the old EJ motors. For a younger driver, it can be too much for them... But is can also introduce them to car culture/love.

Background to the story... Warden said "No!" when I mentioned trading in the ST for an RS. And it just wasn't a hill I was willing to die on.

Is there any such thing as a "reasonably priced" WRX that hasn't been thrashed?
