It’s July now are the California air tyrants giving us our freedom back? Checked ford performance on the first of July and still not showing good news in the shop for the performance pack. ? although being honest I could call the dealer I go to for a accurate answer. Might call Mr. D Friday. Good news I’ll post, bad news I’ll just sit in a corner and sob loudly for 9 seconds.???

So after reading this topic, I thought I would plug in my ProCal and see if there are any updates.

There was one, so I downloaded it, then it popped up this message, whats changed from when I first installed it? there was no message then. Did Ford and Livernois get drug into that crackdown on aftermarket tunes?

I think I will just leave it alone, I was hoping for a trans shift strategy update.

I would suggest reaching out to Ford Performance on that. While I could see that message for the 22-23 MY Rangers, you already have the CARB approved tune for the 21. It may be that the software engineer just got over aggressive with the message and forgot there are years they already have CARB approval for.

If the update is not approved for any year Ranger, makes me more curious as to what they changed.

I plan on calling Ford on it, it's an interesting situation.

Are there any Ca smog tech's here? when they plug in can they see a unapproved tune in the ECU?

To pass smog couldn’t you just flash back to stock for the test then go back to tuned?

(Although if you have carb approval so you shouldn’t have too be inconvenienced like that.)
Don’t they give you a fancy sticker saying it’s approved? shouldn’t be a issue then right?
I agree with @ComtrolNode
Either overly aggressive or just laziness is hopefully that situation.

I called my preferred dealer Service rep on Friday, He was off. Probably on vacation living life like a person or something… but I have a question for him. I want approved More Power… stupid carb.

somewhere on this forum I read (forgive me if I don’t get this accurately.) that the fuel efficiency and size of the vehicle is why the newer trucks have plumped up.. (not sure if it’s relative to this situation since most with tune are seemingly getting better than stock fuel efficiency.).

::Random side thought::possible Conspiracy Theory::?
Could the delay in tune carb approval be due to the release of the 6g (idk if they have a FPTune and I haven’t looked into that.) to give the newer model better chance against the option of purchasing a 5g that might be still on the lot that will have a lower price and higher performance??? Kinda like how the Tremor pkg is currently MIA so it can’t take attention away from the Ranger Raptor (allegedly).

Since I don’t really work for Ford anymore I probably can chime in a bit.

Former Service Writer at a Ford dealership in SoCal.

I’ve talked to our techs pretty extensively about tunes and pretty much depending on how new the smog check equipment is that’s being used a tune can be spotted instantly. Same goes for bringing your vehicle into service for an engine or trans repair.

As for removing the tune before a smog, that’s a gray area as yes you can do that but it can still be seen in the trucks vehicle data since it’s stored in the history of the PCM. The amount of cars we had to void warranty on for engine and trans failures caused by tunes was a lot because they tried to remove the tune before bringing it in.

There is a way to hide the tune after removing it but not sure if I should discuss that here.

I understand it as the first thing they look at is key count, even before looking at the file.

If the key count is low, it was recently flashed.

I spent some time at So Cal dealers, I remember after I left and went to Honda, I'd go back to Ford and visit, one day the Ford rep came through and voided the warranty on several 6.0 diesels, they pick up the heads under higher boost and blow all the coolant out, the local Interstate 5 grade called the Grapevine, it is notoriously hard on vehicles, 5 miles at 6% grade in usually hot weather.

The local diesel shop (ex Ford tech) must have installed dozens of ARP head fastener kits.

You know that it's not nice to tease like that, if ya aint gonna give it up, you shouldn't flaunt it

PM sent lol ?….jk it’s probably to technical for me to do with out bricking the truck anyhow.

The concern for removing it is solely to pass smog when the time comes if the carb approval doesn’t happen, I do leave Cali to do fun stuff occasionally and would like to flash back and forth. Not so much to beat ford on the warranty (I plan to be a good warranty holder till it expires.) and not deal with Cali smog nazis saying my truck is not longer allowed to be registered because it was tuned and returned to stock tune at some point…

C.A.R.B. is pretty ridiculous especially since it’s approved on the vehicle with the same engine for the first few years 19-21, but suddenly it’s not because it’s a 22-23.? (Seriously California get your ish together. Stop trying to turn law abiding citizens into criminals.)… if they were actually different engines, I wouldn’t be bent out of shape about it. I do love the truck as is… but it definitely smells like the same money grab/shadowban bs that’s going on with the whole CA approved hangun list. We don’t consider the gun safe because the manufacturer wouldn’t give us enough money to say it is…
Tune isn’t approved because Ford didn’t pay us AGAIN to approve it.
