I was cruising AutoTrader on Saturday morning and came across a ‘24 Maverick XLT Hybrid with 12 miles on the odometer at a local-ish dealer. Before I bought my Ranger, I was very much in the market for a SUV/truck-like hybrid, but pulled the trigger on the Ranger instead.

Anyways, the dealer let me take it home for the weekend, no strings attached, and now more than ever I’m questioning if I truly need a Ranger, or just want it. The ‘truck’ things I’ve used the Ranger for could be handled by the Mav, and really, we get so few days that require AWd/4WD, not having it isn’t a deal breaker for me.

The Mav is nice - yes, hard plastics are abound on the interior - but it isn’t tacky in my opinion. They do scratch just as easily as any other automotive plastic, but unless you’re paying $$$$ that’s what you can expect with any brand. Leg room in the back is, on paper, close to the Ranger. And really, I didn’t buy the Ranger to haul people, rather because SCABs weren’t available by me. So this metric is moot.

Where the Mav beats the Ranger, and a lot of other vehicles, is gas mileage. It gets the as advertised 42mpg. On the Mav forum it seems some folks regularly get 700 miles a tank on 87 octane. While I only put maybe 8k/yr in miles on my truck, it’s always irritating to pay ~$90 for a fill up with 93 octane. I tried 87, but that the ride becomes noticeably more meh.

So in summary, Mavs in person aren’t as terrible as I thought they’d be. ?‍♂ Curious to hear from anyone who made the switch if you have buyer’s remorse.

They drive a lot better as well. More car-like than truck(Being based on the Escape, its no wonder). I've been babysitting the one we got for my mom for some time now and I'll take it out and dive it every now and then. Granted, hers is the AWD model with tow package. The 8F35 is more sorted as well, although by all accounts, also fragile, but that's partly why we got the tow package on it, for the extra cooling.

I thought that the 2.5 hybrid engine was the base engine? Why is it an option?
I really like the Maverick and would like it as a commuter, mini hauler type vehicle, but I need the 4x4 from the Ranger. I want my girlfriend or sons to get a Mav so I can use it :)

They flipped the script on the Hybrid thing. When they first launched, you are correct. This year they made the 2.0 the base motor.

Been looking hard at hybrid Mav Lariat non black package Azure gray for $35K
I drove one and they are pretty peppy and mileage is insane! Whole different feel than the Tremor but at this point in my life not sure I NEED the Tremor but I love it.. It would be a downgrade but pratical for me...

I really like that color and may be an option for me in the future.
It seems new Ranger owners are getting the screw on the Azure Gray upgrade.
The sticker shows $495 on the Mav, but it's $995 on the Ranger. Sure, the Ranger is bigger, but is it twice as big?

My brother has a Maverick, and loves it. I'll definitely keep my Ranger for another couple of years - until the ESP expires. At that time, I'll have to decide if I even want a 2nd vehicle any longer. But a Maverick would be high on my list as a replacement.

Honestly, if the Maverick fits your needs, I'd get one. They are good looking little trucks. No need to get a larger truck than needed. The Maverick will fit better in a garage, parking spaces and around town.

Our Maverick gets used way more than our Ranger. As an on-road vehicle, it's better. In fact, if it had the same tow rating as my Ranger, I actually wouldn't have any use for my Ranger.

We have both Ranger FX4 lariat wife has 22 Maverick hybrid lariat. So we’re covered for any type road trip. It’s really a great little truck that drives well. I still prefer the Ranger but can’t beat Mavericks mileage.

Turned in the Mav earlier today which ended up finding a new home that afternoon. The whole drive back to the dealer I was going back and forth if this was something I wanted to move forward with. The smooth ride, great mileage, alignment towards my needs, all were reasons I am now very much in the Mav camp. However, I ended up walking because I'm now questioning if I even need a bed. Maybe something enclosed is the way to go, as that seems to fit the 80/20 rule. I guess I could always install a hard tonneau/something similar to keep the bed dry and protected. Regardless, I don't want to have another case of buyer's remorse, so I need to spend more time determining what's right for me before moving forward.

I will say this, if I do decide something with a bed is the way to go, I'll 100% buy a Mav and buy it from that particular dealer. There's something to be said about being treated like adult and not being pressured into a sale. They offered to let me take home anything else on the lot I was interested in for 2-3 days. No other dealer has let me do that. They even shared a nugget of wisdom that apparently this is the last model year for the Edge and as a result, Ford (at least this dealer) is running 0% for 66 months or 1.9% for 75 months on '24s. Even if I don't end up buying from that dealer, I'll be taking both our vehicles there for future service. Not being a stereotypical sleazeball stealership goes a long way in my book.

tl;dr - loved the Mav, will most likely be buying one if I decide I need something with a bed.
