This isn't the first brake controller thread on this forum. You're almost 2 years late to the discussion. I can't wait for your oil change thread.
Ive been on here for over a year and Ive read every one of them making up my mind. I am the first to review the liberty, and I came prepared to use real life info, not just "ford says it wont work without this extra module, and if a grandma pulls out in front of you going 55 with a 6000lb trailer it would have for sure prevented a crash!" Once again, thanks for shitting on my thread with your information that you cant back with experience or proof.

Okay Folks,

There have been several threads that harpoon Ford for not offering a brake controller... I agree this was not a good decision if the truck came with a 7 pin connector and corresponding reciver hitch. However the allegations that it is Ford's fault if someone tows and had a problem that it is Ford's fault...

So...since my Ranger is only a 4 pin connector and only bumper tow, I wanted to see if these allegations were warranted.

The quick start Guide warns to consult the Owner's Manual. The owner's manual outlines the need for a brake controller.

So, like so many laws on the books. It is the responsibility of the owner to read the owner's manual or at lease the quick start pamphlet which directs them to the Trailer Tow portion. To shove off responsibility onto Ford is naive. But is so systemic in this time when people cannot accept responsibility for their own actions.

Go ahead and flame me.... Take this to your dealer and shove it in their face that they failed to tell you about the controller. Get the Federal Government involves in this terrible transgression of Ford. Bet nothing changes. While you are at it...protest the deletion of the center tire downs, which are covered in the fine print..

Ignorant of the requirements (or laws) is no excuse..

Too much arguing going on here. Buying a 5th wheel for my Ranger tomorrow.
End of story.

What proof do you need? Is it designed to work under AEB conditions? It's a simple question. Yes or no.

Ok, fine, yes, but the not so simple question is will it work without the module? Nobody on here has tested it, ford LITERALLY says it MIGHT not work, not that it definitely wont... Furthermore, even if it DID work with the AEB, is auto braking a 6000lb trailer going to prevent the crash. Probably not. So until you can prove that the AEB system will win over basic physics and the law of inertia, I suggest you get off your high horse and just ignore my post. For the 99% of the time and for 99% of people towing, its going ro de everything you will ever need. Thats the proof I need. Youre saying the AEB with a trailer will definitely save my truck, Im saying you DEFINITELY cant say that as a fact.

Not really sure what my mental instability has to do with basic physics, but cool insult, I guess. Anymore worthless comments you need to add?

Late to the party but wanted to say thank you for the review of the Redarc Liberty - seems like the perfect thing for me.

I appreciate your explanation and insight into this. It sure seems like the best choice for me (I'm just trying to verify that my bare bones XL has the 4 wires and I think it does since I have the 7 pin connector).

Nothing can stop me now! Or should that be: hey, I can stop now! =D

For on road trailering, I don't see any advantage of the Elite Redarc over the Liberty. It was my choice.

Same for me Jed. I'm only towing on the road and hearing you say it's good enough helps me feel better about this too.

If I towed an off-road trailer and did it a lot, then the other would have value.

But, if I don't need it, then why add the complexity to the unit.

I'm thinking of installing it somewhere on the dashboard and not in the 12-volt socket. Personally I find the square or round mounting plates a bit chunky looking, but that's just me. =)

I like the location in the 12v outlet. It's easy to grab. If I had an XL without power mirrors, I would consider using the button blank.

I never considered that location. I have power adjustable mirrors but not folding ones, so the small circular plug is available and that's where I'll mount it!

Thank you for the perfect suggestion and how to remove that panel. I'm scared to death of breaking clips, so this is very much appreciated- thank you.

my empty power mirror plug - absolutely perfect!
