I drove from San Diego to Mead Colorado approx 1,100 miles. 91 octane on the way there 22.5 mpg. 87 on the way home 21.2 mpg.
Theoretically it should have gotten better mileage on the way back because Meade is at 5,000 ft elevation and I live at about 400 ft.
Does it pencil out less expensive to use premium? No but the pickup runs better so I use it.
YMMV.

When I bought my ranger this was the case. Most dealerships keep them low.

Funny story though... when I bought my F150 last month, I was pulling off the dealer lot. Done deal. My salesman came sprinting across the parking lot flagging me down. He asked if the truck has fuel. I said it had an 1/8th tank. He said for me to meet him at the gas station across the road. He jogged across the street with a credit card and paid for me to fill up my tank...
When I bought my Tremor last February they had the tank full for me.

Well, you might not care about a scientific analysis or think that "driving style, wind, hills, and highways" matter, but that doesn't change the fact that they DO matter. Your question was about an objective fact, not a subjective opinion, and certainly not in any way related to university presidents testifying before congress.

Whether someone gets better or worse gas mileage with 93 octane DOES depend on the context. As they say: YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.
The question is simply whether one person gets better mileage with high octane. The answer is factual data, i.e. yes or no. Opinions are not involved.

Based on this thread so far versus your question I think you'd get better facts if you simply run the experiment with your own truck.

Whoops... that was an opinion.

If you have read, you should know that I have indeed run the "experiment" with my own truck and have answered the question several times. To repeat, I do not have an increase in mpg with high octane fuel in my Tremor. Now, was that so hard?

Definitely time for the mods to lock this thread! The OP has admitted he has HIS answer and this thread has no use other than create controversy.

I have withheld from posting a response several times this morning, but since the thread is still active on my lunch break, I'll post.

The question is simply whether one person gets better mileage with high octane. The answer is factual data, i.e. yes or no. Opinions are not involved.
Whilst I very much agree with you on school presidents not answering "yes" or "no" and their statement regarding context...

Here's why a discussion on this matter is way more useful that simple yes/no answers: This is a forum where people seek information to obtain knowledge about their truck, its powertrain, etc. by hearing from the experience of others. This thread being locked into only yes or no answers doesn't benefit anyone wanting to learn more about when paying the extra $ for high octane fuel is worth it. Fact: It depends.

Factual data in your question here is not limited to "yes" or "no". Many folks here have stated that it depends on context. Even if with the question being: All things are equal, does high octane fuel make a difference? The answer of "it depends on context" is still a factual answer. All things equal, yes, I get better gas mileage and performance from high octane fuel when I drive to work. All things equal, no, I do not get better gas mileage when I am in town running errands around rush hour. This is not opinion. This is fact.

Very aware. Was making a point. How much more input can you possibly need?

I argue the only way to truly run this as an "experiment" is to run tanks of gas through a dyno... As I said many posts ago, simply fueling two different tanks with different fuel and then driving around town, even if you can microscopically copy your route, there will be too many environmental factors to foul your data.

If we're getting scientific up in here...

lets make this simple. if you want the truck to run stronger use the high grade fuel. if you want to have the best mpg possible get a scooter...

I read somewhere that Luke ran premium in his land speeder while hauling Obi-Wan and the 2 droids and mpg was much better than with regular.....

But we needs facts Grumpaw. Not your opinion.

Better yet how about just a yes or no. Did Luke run premium? Or Not? Facts Grumpaw. Don't bother us with anything less.
