Hello everyone. Posting about my rear axle that was leaking and is now fixed under warranty.

Reason for posting is I had found other people's posts helpful when I had a dead keypad, kept me from exploding at the dealer since I had prior knowledge of a known issue by reading the forums.

Long story short, I noticed seepage at the seal for the wheel bearing and axle shaft.

Master tech (I told them I was going on vacation so they put their best guy on it and management was involved) said it had a "new" flange type on it that was loose. So they re-torqued it and cleaned it all up and I was on my way.

Will update if it returns. I think I may be the only one who had this issue at the moment

In the picture it is visible at the bottom of the caliper carrier and where it dripped inside the wheel

I'm waiting on an axle since May 17th for the same leakage. Apparently Dana has acknowledged an engineering defect, and is working on a solution. This is the note my parts guy read to me off my order about 1 hour ago.

Hmm wonder if they will issue a TSB for this...

Very good to know and thank you, now I won't be surprised if it comes back

My guess is yes, as soon as Dana figures out how to fix the issue, and that fix doesn't involve an entire new axle.

Hi Garrett,

Thanks for the heads up.. Checked my Ranger and all is dry for now...knock on wood... Hope Dana fixes this fast...wonder how they are handling stock rework at the Michigan Truck Assembly Plant.

Well it looks like I am already or will soon be in the same boat as you. Axle is definitely leaking again, less than 100 miles since service.

Will update after vacation when I have time to take it in again, curious to see what they will do this time.

Did you have to take it in several times before they ordered the axle?

I took it in for transmission TSB, and pulsing brakes. When I got it back, they told me they had ordered a rear axle shaft because the runout was out of specs (bent).

When I did my second oil change (12,000 miles), I noticed that it was leaking a little fluid. I called them, and they told me it was on national back order waiting for the manufacturer.

The second time I called, the parts counter guy told me the bit about the manufacturer correcting an engineering defect. (he read it out of the note on the parts system).

I didn't have to finagle, beg, or plead, which is the situation you seem to be in now.

I'd have them check the parts system, or call corporate as this has to be something that is widely known within Ford.

Morning, was wondering if there was an update on your situation? I am going to take it in for the second time today, and was wondering if there was new info in addition to what you have already provided. Thanks a lot

Nope, still on eternal backorder... I'll call them again in a few days to see if there's any update, but I'm at the point where I am probably going to have to 1. take it back in because the brakes are beginning to pulse again, and 2. request that they refill my rear diff as it's been leaking for 4+ months.

Well they are giving it back to me today telling me it wasn't leaking and was residual. At least they finally installed my new keyless entry pad.

I have a feeling I will be bringing it back for the leak. No way was it residual. They had cleaned it spotless previous and over my 3000 mile trip to Mt. Rushmore it began to leak down the tire once the rim had become coated...

No mention of the potential engineering defect?

No mention. They had it for two days. The first day they tried to give it back I said no, and explained your situation. They said ok, let us keep it for another day to look further (they were having trouble programming my new keypad too). I even confirmed the info had been passed onto the tech.

At this point they have it "red-tagged" which they showed me a manager had to sign off for it being back for the same issue and that all three (tech, adviser, manager) had inspected the vehicle. Supposedly the tech is a 20+ year veteran too they said

If I have to bring it back again for the same issue I will probably be calling corporate, as I am starting to loose my patience lol

Right on! If I have to wait another 2 months for no axle I'll be calling Ford Corp too. Eventually I'll be getting new brakes from them because the axle keeps warping them, and if they wait too long, I'll be running my center diff out of fluid and they will be replacing the entire rear end.

Turning 17K miles here in the next week or two.

Update on my truck. I would have liked them to replace the rotors too, but I wasn’t willing to argue about it. Should it happen again, I’ll be in fighting mode. I’ll take more pics of the axle when I get home.
