2022 transmission needs "overhaul" - just left the dealer.

My truck has always had some "weird" shifting. Occasionally some hard shifts on deceleration. The most annoying thing is slow acceleration in 1st, before it shifts into 2nd and jets off like a rocket since the revs are high and I'm in the boost. I think I'll bring it up at my next service. To be clear the truck has a 5yr 60k mile power train warranty on sealed units correct? Meaning the trans is covered until 60k? I'm at 42k now, so past the 12k and 36k warranties.

Trans should be included in the powertrain yeah

Just emailed the service manager as today has been 2 weeks.....here's his response:

"Parts are ordered and not all here yet. Will call as soon as all parts are in and get you back in."

This is the same thing they said 2 weeks ago. Waiting on parts and they'll call when they have them. Fair enough...I'll back off and wait.

Will update again when I hear back from them.

I've been thinking about getting rid of it and trading it off on something else, however, I keep going back to the fact that I REALLY like this truck. I hated the sluggish feel of the Tacoma and I think the Ranger offers the most bang for the buck in its class. If anything, I'd trade up to an F150, but I don't wanna spend more money to be less fuel efficient and see my insurance go up.

I'll see how this process goes and see how I feel after the work has been completed. If nothing else, depending how long it takes, maybe I can work another warranty extension out of Ford (they extended me from 36K to 75K for a PITA electrical issue I had last year). Right now, I'm covered up to 75k miles....if I keep it, I'm definitely going to extend the warranty to the max.

Did they say what parts they were doing? And yeah it may take a while, once they have the parts even if they are doing the full rebuild like they did with mine it should only be 2 days wait. Do you have a rental?

This is all the info I have for now...from the service manager:

"As far as what we are actually doing to the transmission we are rebuilding the internals with new parts including clutches, seals gaskets and valvebody and will reprogram the transmission control module and relearn shift adaptive, technician will put new fluid in it and test drive several times to make sure the repair is complete. If you have further questions don't hesitate to reach out to me. thanks"

As for a rental, I don't have one yet. They told me it was safe to drive. They also said they'd give me a loaner when I brought it back in for the "overhaul". That's part of the reason I emailed them...I wanted to make sure they were only waiting on the parts and not also waiting on a rental. If they have the parts, I have a 2nd vehicle. They should provide a loaner, but I don't want it to add days or weeks. I had that issue with another dealer before. They had the parts but were sitting on everything waiting for a loaner to give me.

Speaking of "safe to drive" I don't know that I completely agree. I pulled away from a stop sign the other day in a very busy intersection and it hesitated and then lurched. I'm used to its quirks at this point, but I won't let my kid drive it. But for now, it is what it is. I emailed the service manager back and told him that if the parts take more than another week or two, I want a loaner.

Yeah the hesitation and lurch is definitely not safe, my only advice for that is be easy on the throttle and budget yourself a lot of extra time when pulling out of places. I also encountered issues where if i was setting off and had to apply extra power it would basically go into neutral when under decent load so be careful with that. It is crazy they are having you drive it though. But good thing is youre getting the proper rebuild and repair so you should be perfect. Mine is still doing great on and offroad, smooth as silk

welp mine is now at the dealer for trans issues... mine started getting worse to the point i couldnt rely on it to get me to work anymore and had to borrow a car from a family member hopefully i hear back soon on it like you did and hopefully it doesnt take forever to fix

For the folks on this forum who were calling us that were warning others of the issues with this transmission scaremongers, etc. and that they were just isolated incidents, I think you need to evaluate your arguments. One look at any forum, for any vehicle that uses this transmission, and you will see tons of what we are seeing in this thread. And it is not just isolated to Ford. GM vehicles are having issues too, but apparently their software engineers can program a transmission's shifting strategy better so their issues are usually just fully mechanical/breakage oriented.

That's part of the reason I posted this. I know there are a bunch of transmission threads, but I wanted to point out that my symptoms weren't necessarily major (no codes, no failures) but at the same time, it never felt right to me. My driving is very consistent, yet the issues are sporadic....can't be normal. I think a lot of people are simply tolerating a lot of the nuances....and they're gonna regret that in a few years when they're out of warranty and the transmission takes a complete dump.

This, or they have no idea that it is abnormal. I mean a lot of folks think a 10K mile oil change on a DI Turbo engine in a truck is okay, so...

My driveway has a hill (about 15 degrees) and my '22 bucks and jerks going up it like its so confused about which gear it should be in. In reality, I believe the bucking and jerking is the torque converter locking and unlocking. The jerking is like the trans wants to rip out of the truck.

There's no way this is considered normal. However, if I bring it in to a dealer, they will not be able to replicate the problem and will just tell me "its normal" and that its part of the quirks of that trans. Fortunately, I have the 75k mile PremiumCare so its covered but still I hate the way the trans acts.

If I did want the dealer to apply some TSB or something, what number would I have them reference? I've read a little bit about having them apply a new shift strategy but if I walk in there with no real info, they will just shoo me away.

Have you tried in select mode? Put it in first and leave it in first see how it reacts on the incline. Then try 2nd. I don't know if this will come to any conclusions but may point you in the right direction. It would at least eliminate the hunting for gears.
