Its not just that, My last car was the 2.0 ecopoop, traded it at 125k and never had an issue. I think highway miles keep most of that at bay. Most Ive heard is the turbo kills the motor earlier than a normally aspirated engine due to heat.
Sorry if this has been said, or even worse, an opposite conclusion was unanimously achieved. (Also it’s a bit wordy!) so here’s my experience & takeaway:

I heard same RE: heat & believe that perception on Turbos was common in the early 90s.

Now:
• turbo 4cyl is replacing NA 6cyl
• turbo 6cyl in place of NA 8cyl
(Hell, twin turbo 6cyl can take down forced
induction 8cyl)

IF HEAT WAS AN ISSUE:
It feels like those particular issues-all related to longevity- have been really been dealt with.

It seems to me that turbos should not have an issue compared to N/A motors, if the vehicle was manufactured/specs appropriate to reliably run turbo.

Also, aside from managing heat for reliability and longevity, Heat kills power; much better with nice cool dense air combusting.

CONSERVATIVE TUNES FROM FACTORY! It’s insane the level of PERFORMANCE left on the table! It’s not like they hide it either since the manufacturers joined the aftermarket tuning mkt, sell more aggressive tunes AND either not touching the warranty or still leaving impressive coverage intact.

(Before my Tremor, I had a BMW 440i Gran Coupé w/ all options but AWD - I chose Track Package instead. Anyway, the turbo Inline-6 picked up a heck of a lot of torque and HP while retaining warranty… peak increase was impressive and the entire curve change was quite awesome! Just a tune, hi flo intake, hi flow cat/catless Downpipe and high pressure fuel pump knocked 0-60 down to a flat 3 sec from roughly 5sec… )

It’s interesting to say the least!

I think the crap stock tunes are EPA driven. The selling stuff "aftermarket" is the side step and a way to make a bit of money; also a way to try and hammer home the USE 93 OCTANE YA DUMMY - for the extra power and safety margin it gives. If the Ranger came stock needing 93 people would either ignore it or not buy the truck... because.. it's a small truck so why the expensive gas?!?! (talking about a regular buyer not the crazy people here that tune them). I am sure Ford knows that stock shift to 10th at 5mph is dumb and that it is underpowered stock; so they sell a tune to undo that crap. As do a few others.

If you believe Scotty, pretty much every manufacturer (Except Toyota) is going down the toilet and will be gone soon. However most of them still seem to be there, - I including some I admit I thought he may have had a point on. Then the next week / clip they are back on top with some new breakthrough!

I have zero issues with these engines, my only takeaway with my Ranger is the tranny, great possibilities but Ford could have done a better job. 53K on my rig and Tranny isn’t happy.

Does anyone care what Scotty Kilmer thinks?
1. He’s a YELLER. I cut vids as soon as they start yelling.
2. Half of what he says checks out the other half is pure BS.
3. He broadcasts from his front driveway instead of an actual auto shop. What’s wrong with that picture?
4. He speaks in absolutes.

No, I DGAF what he thinks.

I was disappointed in Scotty when some yrs back he selected FIAT as making the worst engines, it was close though with Hyundai ( my pick) finishing 2nd. I don't watch much youtube unless it's for repair info or music vids, from what I've seen of TFL they are pretty bad and that Ford Tech guy macalupo or whatever his name is , he's really really bad.

Only a couple of Hyundai / Kia engines are bad, some are really good. The 2.7 V6 used in various Hyundai / Kia models in the mid to late 2000's was a solid engine, the 3.0, 3.5, and 3.8 V6's weren't bad engines once the timing chain issues were resolved, the 2.2 R series diesel (which I don't think you saw in the US at all) is a brilliant engine.

Scotty just annoys me.in general....

Before starting on Hyundai. IMO each company can make turds. I've had and worked on more Dodge and recent.. very recent Nissans (more the cvt..) more than anything. I loved the older nissans.

I ran a "75" shot of nitrous thru a 2.0 Beta and it still had great compression when I got rid of it at 140k miles. I say 75 because that thing ran a bit high on fuel pressure and I kept the jets for 75 using the standard pressure chart. It ran the shot a bit rich so it was more like a 60 if I had to guess. Tried to go a bit safe.... unless it backfired that extra fuel could have
been an issue .... but it didn't.

The transmission developed a whine but it never let go.

Just needed axles and a new clutch; nether were happy with a prepped surface and sticky tires. I also added a window switch to go with the WOT switch To help soften the blow to breakable bits. That's when I learned what a waste spark system was .. finally got the RPM.to track right....

Then my last 2.0 Nu; it was just shy of 160k when number 2 felt like having compression was optional.... and I traded it in. No crazy mods on that one..some minor stuff. Just drove the poo out of it. Trans was still solid... can't say that about my 26k mile Ford. At least the tune made it livable.

Last note on who makes crap engines and what not. Both 4cyls from Hyundai ate oil at a quart per 3k. The 3.3 Kia I own now and the 3.8 RS.... no oil burn. Neither one hardly darkens the oil at all by 5k.

Kilmer could be telling me the secret to infinite wealth, happiness, and longevity and I wouldn't stay to hear it because he YELLS every word he says.
