What's that white, funnel-like thing?
That funnel guides the long rod into the assembly that raises and lowers the spare.

I suggest practicing lowering the spare in your garage sometime. It will make it easier than trying to figure it out on the side of the road.

Can flip over the spare too so it's easy to check the tire pressure then.

Great advice.

When I changed out the rear shocks two weeks back, I had a miserable time lining up the rod into that white funnel thing. But .. to be fair, I also had the tailgate down with crap all over it, so I was trying to do it without scratching it or ding it with the handle once aligned.

Once it's in there, it cranks down easily. It also cranks back up easily but I did have to guide the tire back up so it would sit square against it flat plates under the bed.

I flipped mine over and placed the valve toward the back. It would take a hell of a rock to reach up and rip it out. And, as a Dump Runner Extraordinaire, my chances of doing that are exactly zero. =)

You folks in the salt belt would probably be well served cleaning that thing off on a yearly basis and doing some dielectric grease on the terminals, or some other preventative.

Especially since it will leave you walking when the salt eats it.
