It's been a while since I priced a warranty and pretty much decided not to buy one, but I recently got an email from my credit union offering a vehicle warranty through them. Price: 60 Months / 100000 Miles for $1,345.00 and $250 deductible. It's the Elite plan covering virtually all mechanical and electrical components. I can't remember the last quote I got from a dealership on this forum.

That's the best way to get a warranty IMO. When I goty truck it was my first new buy and I wanted to be "responsible" and fell for the 6yr/100k warranty that they sold to me for like 5k or 6k and like 1500 for the gap insurance. My uncle was a union rep for years and when I told him what happened he was furious. He told me to cancel it (you have 14 days) and to join his credit union.

I canceled it in time and I learned that the dealership overcharged for the warranty and had it rolled into the loan so I would've paid interest on it. When I joined the CU they offered a warranty for like $1400 on top of the loan so no interest and the gap insurance for like 400. I didn't take either one and have since then modded the crap out of the truck with 20k in upgrades ???

But if I was to buy a warranty I would only do it through the CU.

I bought the same plan (years and miles) through Ziegler Ford and it was much less than $1345. I believe I paid around $800, but it’s been a while ago, so I can’t recall exactly. It depends on your miles when you buy it, so YMMV. You can get e free quote.

Be very careful with 3rd party warranties. Many repair facilities/dealers may not accept them, and it's up to you to pay and then try to recoup from the warranty company.
Not familiar with CU warranties...they may be some of the better ones, and the exception.....but still dosen't mean that a dealer will honor it...you may have to pay up front.
But do not discount the manufacturers extended warranties, like the Ford via Granger. They sell for only$50 bucks over cost, and it's a Ford warranty which means that ANY Ford dealer will honor it.

I really don't care if the cost is covered up front, I can easily cover until whatever warranty kicks in. Which is one reason why I wonder if it's worth rolling the dice. I can pay for any expensive repair at any time.

So Granger is the better deal for sure. Thanks everyone. I am still not sold, as I said, I am able to pay for any major repair out-of-pocket. So it's just a gamble.

I got a warranty thru the CU, very similar to above. My truck had about 18k miles when I got it, but was beyond factory time.

I got the 125k mile warranty, which takes me thru 142k miles.

This is what I gather. The dealership and CU's are opposites. Dealership is trying to screw you any way possible, and the CU is looking for the best deal to give you. CU is great for auto and personal loans, but I'm not sure about mortgage.

You may want to verify that. Every car warranty I have ever seen is based on 0 miles on the odometer and the year/months duration start is based on the original purchase date of the vehicle. So, a 125k warranty will not be the miles on the odometer at the time of warranty purchase + 125k, it will be 125k miles on the odometer.

I heard this type of story so many times. Sorry this happened to you. If you can swing it, the best time to buy an extended warranty is right before the manufactures bumper-to-bumper warrant expires. The main reason for this is that if you decide to sell the vehicle before the bumper-to-bumper warranty runs out, or if the vehicle is declared a total loss, you are not out any money.

One question to ask about the extended warranty from your Credit Union. Being a 60 month 100,000 mile warranty when does it officially take affect if you buy it? Does it start from the time you bought the vehicle or when you bought the warranty? Reason I ask is if you bought the truck 3 years ago and it goes off of the truck purchase date then you only have 2 years of effective warranty available (BTW the Ford Extended Warranty will be the same thing). If it goes off of when you buy it and have 5 years from that day(and up to 100,000 miles on the vehicle itself)then it's not so bad if you barely drive the vehicle.

Just as another suggestion, I would highly recommend at least pricing Granger. I had an 8 year 100k for around $1300. I paid about $800-900 after using my Ford Pass points toward it. I doubt it can be beat by third party.
