I was running the bully dog 91 performance tune. Funny thing is I got the tune to help my issues with the tranny. When I first put the tube on, it was like brand new. Shifts were butter smooth. Then time past and bam, back to bad shifts. Hence why I think this could be one of the culprits behind the tranny issues.

misfit I have a goal, to push this ranger’s transmission till it self implodes and leaves me an angry, stranded mess on the side of the road.
@TORQUERULES and Unleashed were working on a shift that was preprogrammed to disable the learning (or something similar). Not sure where they left off but they've easily put the most time and energy into trying to map the 10r80 in the Ranger, guaranteed.

The LoonyTunes reflection was intentional.

Ford's Performance Tune changes the operation of the transmission to coincide with the additional torque. It still has a few idiosyncrasies (i.e.: slowing down and shifting into Sports Mode often results in a very hard downshift!), but overall it corrects a lot of the complaints proffered here.

Let's assume you do your easy driving in Drive, and your hard driving in Sports Mode. The result will be much more pleasant shifting with less harshness when in normal driving. And, the shifting in Sports Mode will become quicker once the fuzzy logic catches up to your driving style.

I recall a TSB about the transmission oil, but I don't think it affected too many vehicles. For some who want peace of mind, it might be worth the expense.

Trailer mode is something I don't use, so I can't comment on that use. However, it seems to help in start-stop type of city driving, albeit I can't call my city driving start-stop (I live in Roswell, NM).

Lastly... I think some folks are a bit too critical, as they tend to "look" for an issue as if they had buyer's remorse. For those, please remember this is a truck! It rides like one, drives like one, and can go where your Escort can't! It wasn't meant to be a rock crawler, but some folks turn it into one. Just like tuning, bigger intercooler, CAI, etc., everything is a tradeoff. Did you mod it? Then get over the idiosyncrasies!

Bully dog? Do a search. Pages of problems. No thanks.

Can you explain why it seems the transmission wants to skip fourth, kind figure it out, misses fourth, slams back into third, shudders trying to get into fourth? Did it stock and did it under tune. Since you know everything about this transmission please share with us

What about before the tune, when it was stock?
I wasn’t thrilled with the transmission without the tune. After Ford tune it is fine. When it was stock it was always at least one gear too high causing you to apply too much throttle then back off. Transmission constantly shifting back and forth.

Also, don’t expect much help on this forum if you just want to fight everyone that replies.

My transmission was replaced with a new unit and it's been working perfectly! Weird...
Me too, weird. At least mine was at 57k under warranty. They did the typical valve body replacement on the first visit and when I turned around and brought it back in, new trans

i wonder if it is possible to stop the learn procedure and just have it shift- you know, like a transmission lol.
What madness you speak! A transmission that just shifts as the vehicle's speed changes? Heretic! Stone the non-believer!

Idk what you mean by fighting everyone. Just gave a simple reminder of what was said earlier about running stock with issues and facing the same issues after time spent with the tune. ???

Gentlemen, the way the transmission shifts, has to do with many factors not the least of which is the weight you're hauling. I don't haul anything, save for "hauling-ass"! And I don't have a myriad of stop signs and lights. Nor do I have extra large tires. I tend to drive smoother than most, due in part to a number of years racing Group Two solo. Each and every one of these factors changes what the transmission "learns".

During normal driving (no trailer towing mode), the transmission will skip gears. This is one reason the Ranger gets decent fuel mileage, all things considered. Shifting to 4th, and then banging back to 3rd isn't common, unless of course the tires are larger than those Ford recommends.

The reason I mention the tires is simply this: The transmission's logic depends on input RPM, output RPM, throttle position, etc. And it is based on the size tires Ford recommends. Bigger tires mean funny transmission shifting, and longer stopping distances, not to mention handling changes. I know not everyone changes their tire size, but I've yet to see a Ranger in my parts which hasn't had larger tires installed—by the dealer!! If nothing else, it is food for thought!

Fair enough. But honestly I would consider a well respected tune, plenty of better options.

I’m definitely interested in the one someone brought up that disables the learn feature. I’d be willing to pay for that and give it a solid 25k mile test
