I never liked the cj style jeeps, lack character imho. I thought the Land Cruisers of the 70's looked badass. Just as utilitarian on the inside though.
The scary thing is the models didn't change much. They only gained a driver's airbag in the last year or two - previously using a commercial vehicle loophole to avoid it, and the inside is still bare painted metal and vinyl. Only the price has changed it is now completely outrageous considering you are buying a 1960's vehicle with a few new dodads and a somewhat modern engine grafted in. https://www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/toyota-landcruiser-70-series-2023-review-140287/

I went to school for automechanics back in the early 80's. My friend (whos parents had money) drove an earlier British Land Rover. That was super cool. One time we were at East Beach in RI, and were driving on the beach. A Coast Guard patrol driving a Chevy Blazer?? went screaming by us, tried turning on a dime, and buried it. They asked if we would pull them out, which he did.
That would climb up a wall, at 1500 rpm. Wasn't fast, but the gearing was super low.

To be fair so would I. lol The log cabin we're renting now is as close to camping as I'll get. ?
I never went camping with my family as a kid…my dad told me he spent the first 18 years of his life camping and he was done with it (Raised on a small farm in central Bama. No indoor plumbing, wood stove, no A/C. When we visited my grandparents there was no indoor plumbing until I was 16 years old.) Had to worm my way into friends’ families trips.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
Thank you for posting that link. That was interesting…. Reminded me of a CJ5.
Dang! I loved my CJ5, Clifford Research intake, Holly 4 barrel rejetted to a 300, split headers, full roll cage, Ramsey winch, duel 4" tube bumpers, manual lockers, that little 258 6 could really move. Did a lot of Ghost Towning in that thing.

It was in fact Mitsubishi, they still made them until quite recently. Here's an example of one being sold here as a grey market import. They were never officially sold here by Mitsubishi. They look like jeeps but used Mitsubishi engines. https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/mitsubishi-jeep-1992/OAG-AD-21076589
that website must think I'm a bot or something. I get the most horrendous captcha tests I've ever seen, and they all fail. there's a "slide the puzzle piece to the right" one that doesn't ever pass. and then a "type the numbers you hear" one that also fails every time.

Old people created a lot of things but old people also screwed up a lot of things for the foreseeable generations to come.

How about we call it a draw.

Also overlanding is not camping. Overlanding is glamping on wheels let's not lie to ourselves.

I love glamping. Camping has absolutely zero appeal to me. I don't need to sleep in my own ball sweat to prove I am more manlier.

Mobile AC and heat FTW

you may be right and I don't feel like googling. I know there were "overlanding" companies for moving cargo and people out west during the westward expansion. they actually had overland in their names. as to where they took that from? I don't know

I overlanded alot in the mid to late 70's with my parents.

Sure most times it was just sleeping in the bed of the truck at my dads baseball tournaments at the ball diamond.

But occasionally it went off road.

Now off road is more like the ditch because he was pissed drunk and drove off into the sticks and we stayed there until he slept it off, or a farmer towed us out with his Massy Ferguson.
I believe in one instance he managed to keep the momentum going with the three on a tree and got us out the other side of the muddy ditch, to only sink us in a muddy field where the dairy cows hung out. Farmer was not impressed as a fence was taken out in the process and the cows took advantage.
But what an experience though. Waking up to the sunrise over the trees, the sounds of birds chirping. Trash Pandas rooting through anything they could find strewn about the area.
My generation lived a full life because of this. Todays generations are soft.

Jeep released an "Overlander" model here back in the 1980's I always figured it was based on the old Willys link. Although we used the term here I never thought it originated here - we've always used "outback" hence the Subaru AWD model wagon with the same name , that DID come from here.
Oh... I thought thy named it that because so many Subie owners go to the Outback restaurants.

If you're using a VPN, try locating it in a free world country.

Seriously, if you have settings for block content or pop-up windows, or do not have Java Script enabled, one or more of these may be causing the failures.

Overlanding, Van Life. Sell stuff with exorbitant mark ups to the cool kids.
Pretty much this. Why a lot of us fabricate up our own big ticket items.

I have near future plans to build my own square-drop off road camper because its just so much damn cheaper and customizable.
