Story time.

So.........when i was a kid, oh like back in the late 70s early 80s, my father had a 1980 f250 regular cab, long bed 351m factory 8track 4x2. He had a camper on it. Made a wooden bed in the back, bench seats in the sides, all the gear and stuff tucked under the bed and the bench seats. Took it all off when vacation was done. We lived in ft collins, co. We camped the rockies, yellostone, texas, and lots of Colorado. I guess we where overlanding and just never knew it. My father pushed the mpg a lot and we where always in need of a gas can! Lol. 10mpg. And we liked it! Lots of campfires, bias ply tires, lots of fun, and buffalo, so yeah, my old man liked camping backed then. I still do it now, just throw my shi.. stuff in the back of the truck and camp. I dont have all that modern camping gear stuff. And looking to go glamping the older i get,

Edit
all camping in 80s. Could not happen in 70s, the truck was an 80! Lol

Not really. Fun fact, ever since either Vietnam or Korea(can't remember Wich one it was) it was thanks to the US making huge orders to auto manufacturers in Japan to make Jeeps for the War. Toyota and Nissan were involved for sure(others may have been too but I'm not sure). Thanks to that the two manufacturers were able to build their own versions of the Jeep. For Toyota it was the Land Cruiser. For Nissan it was the Patrol. Both being well built at that.
Not Vietnam. Nor Korea.

It was after WWII. Part of trying to get Japanese industry started back up. Willys ended up bitching, via lawyers, and Toyota had to stop using "Jeep." Welcome "Land Cruiser."

Lot more than that to the story but you get the gist.

You are correct about it being after WWII. When the US Military put in the ordered it helped Japan come back from the pitfall they had. It was during one of the two wars after that the orders were put in and being fulfilled (I found out a few years back while watching History of the Z). Toyota and Nissan at the least I'm sure took many notes on the Jeeps design since it was a very practical vehicle of it's time for the particular use

Sure is, don't know what they were thinking. They also tossed the previous v8 diesel, beloved over here of owners of large boats and Caravans, and replaced it a poxy little V6 diesel with a "revolutionary Hot V" design.
This is where some Toyota engineer got his blueprints mixed up and ended up with the exhaust manifolds in the middle of the V, therefore deifying the good design principals of V engines used ever since Henry first developed the Flathead V8. How this will fare here over here in the middle of summer, long term, is yet to be seen, but it's certainly helped to push a few sales Nissan's way who's wagon although petrol instead of diesel, has proven to be a well priced, reliable, and surprisingly economical unit.
