Awesome.
We had an AC-130 land at the guard base I was a civilian firefighter at. Of course we all had to go check it out. Also had the C-130 with the skis and takeoff rockets visit. Every year during fire season, we refilled the C-130s tankers.

All kidding aside.
My duty station after basic and rate training was NAS Alameda, CA.
One day a fellow AME, responsible for pilot and crew life support systems, walked to where ships were moored. There was a WW2 vintage submarine tied up at one of the docks. The person on watch saw our interest in the boat and asked if we wanter to come aboard. Didn't need to ask us twice.
Very interesting seeing the small and confined space the crew has to preform their duty.

We always used to say about submariners that 80 men go down, and 40 couples come back up. ?Once I was told that they “hot” rack, where you’re in 18 hour shifts which was 6 hours of watch, 6 hours work, and the other 6 for eating, sleeping, etc which allows three guys to use the same rack, I figured I’d like to at least have my own rack to sleep in. I almost did end up on a submarine though if it wasn’t for a weld school getting cancelled. I figured at least on a carrier with 6000 people you’d at least be able to get away from some people once in a while…nope I was wrong.

I wish I could say that about the current military. I’ve still got friends serving who would otherwise made a career out of it. They’re now getting out even after putting in a substantial amount of time.

Other thread asking if getting older is a problem. Being older is being a blessing and have been uninvolved in such things.
