I was on my typical ride home from work on central Va. backroads. These are unmarked somewhat narrow roads with seldom posted speed limit signs. I was going a casual 45MPH or so, when I noticed headlights approaching quickly from behind. Then I thought he turned, no car in left rear view, no car in right rear view. Then suddenly I barely noticed the top of the car in my center rear view. He was so close on my ass, I could no longer see his headlights. He rode my ass as I approached a T intersection which I normally just coast to, to minimize the need for brakes. I had to wait for a car coming from the right, which was gonig very slow. So for the next couple of miles it was not me slowing us down. Then the next intersection was a 4 way, and the car in front turned right. Ahead was about a 3/4 mile straight away, slight downhill, cross a creek then uphill to a sharp curve. I nailed it, and the Audi faded in the distance. As I crossed the creek, I let up so I could coast into the curve and resume my normal pace. That's when he caught up to me. About a mile later he turned.
What a thrill! It was couple of miles later I realized I still had it in tow mode!

Sounds like a movie. You handled someone riding your bumper with such class too.

I usually just set cruise at EXACTLY the posted speed limit and watch for steam coming from the dumbass’ ears when he can’t pass for the foreseeable future.

The Audi, Mercedes and BMW’s tend to perform quite well. I think the only Audi that the Ranger would be able to beat in a race would be the Q3 – their smallest SUV. It would be a good race, and they would probably run side-by-side. My wife has a base model Mercedes GLC 300. That is Mercedes second from the bottom SUV and it is the size of a Rav4 or CR-V. The GLC 300 is noticeably quicker than my Ranger. In an actual race, my Ranger would be In the rear view mirror.

This Audi was a sedan I think. And he might have been able take me off the line. But we were at the only passing zone for several miles and with him riding my ass I am sure he wanted to take advantage of it. Ranger made him get really small in rear view fast. That was before my tune. Now it's a whole new ball game.

Who knows how old the Audi was, but the current base Audi A3 sedan will turn a low 6.3 second 0 to 60. That is according to the Audi web site. Maybe they are stretching the truth - who knows. Seriously, if that guy was really racing, do you think he would fade in the rear view mirror quickly? He may not be able to pass the Ranger in a race, but that car should be able to run side-by-side pretty easily. Now that is just the base model. If they had the second level A3, Audi claims a 4.5 second 0 to 60. We don't want to talk about the 3rd level A3.

Today, I passed a car that was being tailgated by a Toyota Tundra. Then the Tundra swapped lanes to tailgate me, and once he cleared the other car, swapped lanes back to pass me. Normally I let such drivers pass and catch em at the next light.

But no sir, not today. Once he pulled even to pass, I flat stomped it! I am quite sure he saw me laughing maniacally in my side mirror as his grill faded from view, because even after I let up and coasted back to the speed limit, he remained a respectable distance back for the next several miles.

I take about ten miles of winding country roads to work before I hit the main highway where my office is. If I hit the wrong window of time in the morning I get behind an old lady in a silver Cadillac CT4 who is going between 5 and 15 mph under the speed limit because curves are scary. There are two spots where the road is straight enough and long enough to safely pass her illegally if no one is coming the other way and it's good that the Ranger has enough power to do that. Yeah, yeah, I'm passing illegally but she should rightly be cited for obstructing traffic.

No I think I just caught him off guard and took off thru the passing zone before he got a chance. They way he caught up to me made me think he at least tried. Who knows? That's why my post title say "sort of".

I have a similar potential situation. There is a minivan which I think is some sort of student transfer that takes almost the entire route I do. It too goes between 5 and 15 under. I am sure they are just trying to be safe with the students, but I think it's more hazardous because it forces people to want to pass illegally, which I do when it's safe.

Never mind whether someone chooses to pass them illegally (that's the passers choice, after all), but if they're doing 15mph under the speed limit on winding roads, it's way too possible for someone who's doing the speed limit to discover this slowpoke as they're coming around the corner. Driver 2 will have done nothing wrong, but could still end up rear-ending Driver 1 at a 15mph difference, which is enough to do some damage and maybe injury.

In Europe, they actually enforce the laws about driving too slow, which is why you'll rarely ever see someone "camping" in the passing lanes on their highways. As far as I know, such laws exist in N. Am. too, but they're rarely enforced, and so don't have any teeth.
