Went to colder spark plugs.........and....

No clue there. I did a little digging and apparently it's not that uncommon to see flashover with the ecoboost engines regardless if tuned or not, and may not be any indication of potential issues.

I'm at 64k miles, so 12k miles since changing the plugs and zero issues with anything. After reading a little since this thread was revived, I'm happy we double-checked and went with the recommended torque specs. I was concerned about over-torquing, but apparently under-torquing can be just as bad.

106in/lb if using an in/lb torque driver like we did..........which strangely does not calculate the same. 106in/lb is closer to 9ish ft/lb

I'll probably go with ruthenium in stock heat range next, still got the iridium in the stock heat range.

How many miles do you guys have on the one step colder plugs?

I'm not sure if this should be in the "Issues..." forum or here, but I found it interesting.

42,000+ miles on my '20 Ranger FX4 Lariat and the vast majority of it has been with an Eibach leveling kit, 265/70/18 Toyo Open Country AT3 tires, and Ford Performance tuner. Fuel mileage had been great but had dropped a little over the last 2 months,.... I was also driving short distances and less over the interstates like I do from March to October tho. I also felt that the truck just wasn't that fast and impressive like I'd remembered when I first bought it and especially like I remembered when I installed the Tuner.

I thought I'd try the colder NGK-95822 spark plugs, got them in finally, and we went to install them. What we found on the old spark plugs was that 2 of the 4 were definitely tightened past torque specs, and 2 of 4 had what I'd call a "flash over" where they looked burned via electricity on the porcelain portion like the boots possibly weren't tight. They weren't the 2 tight or 2 correctly torqued that I remember, so no correlation there, and the new spark plugs have antiseize and are torqued to ford's specs.

IMMEDIATELY upon leaving, the truck felt like I'd remembered when I first tuned it and my MPG's have been slowly climbing back up.

Guessing I'll see if I can get replacement boots for the coil packs and plan to replace them and these colder plugs around another 30k miles or so to be safe.

The rubber insert is ok for a wile but sometimes pulls out. The socket that has a magnet in side works much better for me and yes it costs more but worth the extra coin..

Average from there to 73k was just a hair under 20mpg with about 50/50 highway and city driving and 8-12 long trips per year.

replaced those with new plugs last week at 73k and they looked much better.

5/8 ths. You can spray the rubber holder with a little wd40 an it will still hold the plug but should slide off when you remove the socket.

I'd be worried about snapping them off with the way Ford overtorques parts from the factory.

Try removing plugs from a 2005 F150 5.4 liter 3 valve engine stock. On the ranger you may might break the porcelain but you won’t leave the piece in hole requiring a special removal tool. Been there done that. A 2 day job I didn’t enjoy..
New plugs are all one piece welded instead of crimped. Google it and feel lucky. Also use a plug socket with a rubber insert. I usually remove the rubber insert and cut it short so will release the socket after installing new plugs.

Thinking about removing the plugs and coating them with some anti seize and put them back in. Anyone do that? Good idea?
