Don't know but probably has fine print that states for off road use only , check local laws before installing or similar . Reminds me of the shock absorbing bumpers mandated in the late 70's before crumple zones or airbags etc .
I don't see the disclaimer on their website although with lawyers I wouldn't doubt there could be litigation even when you are struck from behind these days.

Thank you guys for all the insight. I’m leaning towards the tyger or another one a little more pricy. I knew at 45$ price point the original one would have some downfalls.

I have THIS one that I got off Amazon for $40 as an open box a couple years ago. I figured that if it was actually worth anything then an open box couldn't be messed up.

I was right. It's VERY solid. Solid steel actually.

They have a used one now for $43 so it's gone up a bit.

Super strong, makes a great step, and also is easy to attach a tow strap to it.

I only mount it for a trail ride, though I've been thinking about running it more often as the tailgaters increase. I've never had to use the anti-rattle contraption pictured.

that WITH a ball on it would be perfect

Yikes, so crazy about the legality of all of this. I get it, but I also like that welded-on pipe wrench!

You can be sued for anything, unfortunately, even if you do it all legally—you still have to pay for a defense. Bah! =(

I know you were looking for a cost effective one, so what I do doesn't apply. But I will say that it's super easy to use, I use it regularly and it can be used with the tailgate down and with a trailer connected.

Apart from side steps, it's now a necessity and I can't imagine not having it (I rationalized the price because I have a base XL with steelies, blah, blah, blah).

Of course, being of the magnificent stature that I am and my maturity (ie, old and fat) the need for this is pretty high for me. =D

Good luck and there have been some really good options touted in this thread.

The problem arises after a crash . There was a big lawsuit over one that bowed in the front bumper of a car that prevented the airbag from deploying correctly . It was a long time ago so I can't recall the outcome but you have to be aware of how it will affect someone that hits you from behind . I don't keep my hitch in the receiver because I am aware of the damage it does to my own shinbone :)
So, if a hitch bows in the bumper and prevents the air bags from deploying, will the same happen if you hit a post? I'm not doubting what you said, lawyers will always try to find blame. IIRC, the inertia switch that triggers the air bags is not in the bumper.

Agreed, I’ve walked into a hitch enough that I won’t leave one in the receiver. And I wouldn’t want a step that I couldn’t use with the tailgate lowered. Just carry a small step in the bed.
Two step collapsible ladder. Fits snug enough that it doesn't rattle. And yes, it is secured with bungies at the rear tie downs.

Not here to argue , just pointing out something to be aware of . Many advertise to sue your own insurance company for your own injuries after an accident involving a hitch , imagine the ones that sue on behalf of the occupants of the other vehicle !

In the mid 90's I remember there were more law students in school than there were lawyers in the world at that time . The effects are showing up now . I can name 10 ambulance chasers off the top of my head right now due to all the repeated TV, radio and billboard ads that keep flooding my head with catchy jingles and I'm not even their target . I forget to remove mine once in awhile but mostly tend to remove it as it makes noise anyway when left in the receiver .

Looks like it would make a good seat too, for changing out of muddy boots.
I got it for added rear end protection but it's proved useful for sitting, standing and it stays mounted secured with no movement...come off for a hitch ball quickly too...I like the lines/shape of this design...

I use weathertech's bump step. First one was hit three times before it was demolished. All three times, it saved my bumper from inevitable and costly damage.

That sold me.

They are incredibly tough despite them being plastic.

With a metal one, I would be afraid that it wouldn't give and thus damage the hitch structure.

But, who knows...

Looks better than that crap on @Msfitoy 's truck.

Sorry - I'll never stop giving you crap about putting a Tyger Auto product on an otherwise pristine machine you knuckle head. lol

I think I might start a GoFundMe campaign so we can buy @Msfitoy something more befitting his iconic ride.
