This is thee LAST thing I'd want here! I don't want Ford or any manufacturer monitoring my speed. Lets let the police handle the speeders and the manufacturers stay the heck out of our business! What could go wrong?

https://www.yahoo.com/autos/ford-wants-force-not-speed-170000420.html

Ford excitedly explains how each car connects to a geofencing system in the city. That means the government can track where you are while also extracting data from your vehicle. Just think of the possibilities as you’re forced to do what’s right. For starters, you’ll never have to show your papers to authorities again since they can just access such things from your car while it’s being moved in a very controlled manner. To have a government that cares so much about your safety to control exactly how you get around to the most minute detail is truly a blessing.

Even more exciting, Ford’s talking the possibility of dynamic speed limits. That means how fast you’re allowed to go changes depending on “local hazards, temporary road works and the time of day.” We sure haven’t seen governments abuse emergencies and such at all, so this should work out super great.

Welcome to the future... Late for work? Upgrade your self driving software to our platinum tier that gives you priority at stops and intersections over vehicles on our standard plan for only $150/mo more on your vehicle subscription.
Or better yet, have your vehicle subscription geofenced to certain areas or speeds depending on what you paid.

Safety and law enforcement are side benefits here, the real goal I'm sure is monetization.

If lives are saved, its the direction things will go. Like it or not.
If manufacturers want government bailouts, or support, they're in the governments pocket and follow their mandate like good children.
But isnt this topic is very borderline on politics?
The quoted text on the thread itself refers to the government numerous times. We can't talk politics or has that changed?
Says the one who just added government bailout to his post?

This is MOSTLY to do about what Ford is doing and yes there is some government interaction here. But as long as this doesn't go off track and get political saying the word government is not a no no here.

Steve this is about Ford and government agencies. Agencies are police, fire etc but I think MOST can have a civil conversation here without bring up politics whether it's red/blue. If not then I'll close it but this is mostly about what Ford is doing not the govt.

Man, I see good and bad here. There are definitely A-holes who drive like idiots and put people at risk for no good reason, but there are also people who have an actual emergency and need to move quickly. If I have a chainsaw-meets-body accident and need to rush to the ER, I don't want Ford telling me that rushing isn't an option.

So is this technology really so much about Ford wanting us to "be safe out there", or more about Ford wanting to suck up to various governments around the world as RP has suggested above?

That's a great example....Thx! Many here drive like total maniacs so it would be helpful in curbing a lot of the accidents we have here. But on there other hand I don't want them (Ford) controlling how I drive. Leave that up to the police.

IDK but are these governments putting pressure on manufacturers now to do this? Seeing as this is the first I've heard of this I can't see how this is Fords idea. Maybe I'm wrong but I think we're going to see all the others coming out with this soon enough.

A legitimate emergency to millennials or gen x would include speeding to get to a fast food drive thru prior to closing.

Ford would be better served using the $$ they are spending to return decontented items in the Ranger and other vehicles. They claim to be supported of the USA and spend money on that type of stupidity ?

When I lived in PA (thankfully done with that) I would have to drive the archaic overpriced over patrolled turnpike, occasionally noticed police sitting nearby the exits and found out why as they used the toll booth time stamp as proof that I was speeding (Iwas) and they wrote me a ticket, unbelievable.

"Freie Fahrt fĂĽr freie BĂĽrger" is practically Germany's motto, so I doubt a program/experiment like this is mandatory. Here is the German press release that says that Ford is testing two fully electric Transit Vans in Cologne using Geofencing to maintain speed limits in pedestrian heavy areas (Speed limit 30kph) It's a test program between Cologne, Ford Europe and Ford's engineering in Palo Alto California.

My guess (and it's just a guess) is that German cities would offer incentives for drivers to opt in or make cars that don't participate pay tolls like they currently do with older cars that meet older, but legal, emissions standards.

Your not wrong. Auto manufacturers are in the pockets of the government and vice versa.

Anything that can happen to give the elite more control over its subordinates IS absolutely going to happen.
