Toyo Open Country AT3 285/70/17 w/ level

Hey guys, I just took my 2021 in to have Bilstein 5100's installed to level the truck out. My mechanic convinced me to go with Toyo Open Country AT3 285/70/17 claiming they wouldnt rub...but at full lock they rub, seemingly on the frame.

It seems like there is plenty of room with the crashbars and I haven't moved them or removed the plastic yet... but I am a total newbie to trucks and mods etc. so I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Is there a solution to the rubbing I'm experiencing and do you guys think I'll have issues with the crashbars doing some mild offroading?

I've got a 2021 Lariat FX4 that has the fox 2.0 level and Wheels with +20 offset (stick out 30mm past stock). So take into consideration that my experience includes a slightly different set-up.

When I put my Wrangler Duratrac 265/70/17 on, I had some rub on the plastic piece outside the crashbar.

You mentioned you think your tires may be rubbing on the frame, which may be possible given that we have difference offset.... But I would check to see if you can tell if the plastic on the crashbar shows any wear.

If the plastic is the culprit, you may be able to take the cover off, and not have rubbing.

Ultimately, I did end up replacing my crashbars, but I would only add that really light off-roading most likely wouldn't cause an issue.

My rub was only at full lock, in reverse, which only occurred in parking lots for me. Although the rubbing really did not occur while off-roading, I ultimately replaced the crashbar because I did not like any rubbing, and the BDS intrusion beams were pretty inexpensive.

Certainly wouldn't hurt to push the crash bars back with how easy it is to do. Just the two bolts on the top of each, push back and tighten. Do you have any spacers? It was my understanding that a 285 would not fit without them because the extra width, they would rub on the spindle. I have 285/70r17 using a 5 mm spacer and have zero issues with rubbing on or off road.

I've got the magnetic sport wheels but i think they are the same specs as the silver XLT wheels.

Didn’t post pictures at full lock. I would bet the rubbing is on the crash bars. I would also check your clearance on your suspension. It has to be pretty close with stock wheels. Either way the solutions are pretty easy. Move or replace/delete your crash bars and if any suspension rub add a small spacer.

So far I'm not seeing any evidence of crash bar rubbing. If you look at the smudge marks in this picture its looking like frame and sway bar. I'm going to move the crash bars anyway to begin with and also add a small spacer and see what happens.

The very reason I went with a -12 offset way back in 2019. Lessons learned on my old taco. I have no frame rub at all. Yes the spacer will fix the frame rub. However, I'm not a fan of spacers. Had nothing but issues with spacers on my previous 4x4's. If your mall crawling they are fine. Heavy off road.... not so much.

I do very mild off road driving - essentially driving around in the desert to get to shooting/camping spots. I think if I got into anything more serious I might look into different wheels. In your experience are spacers not a good idea for that sort of use? And what issues did you run into with yours?

Just looking at the side pictures it's obvious you will get rub up front. Plenty of owners know this and has been heavily documented. 285's rub when using stock wheel offset even with a level kit. You would have to get wheels spacers, or better yet, aftermarket wheels with negative offset (does the same thing as spacers only more robust).

So long as you buy quality spacers, you shouldn't have an issue with them.

You're saying they'll definitely rub up front under what circumstances? Currently at full lock on flat surface forward and reverse there's no rub up front.

I've got 11,000 miles using the 33" AT3, with 2" level lift. No rubbing, no problems at all.
