I'm wanting to put 265/70/17 tires on the XLT magnet colored rims, but having a hard time finding someone to install these "slightly" oversized tires. I tried one Discount tire store and the local Pep-boys. They both will only install factory size! What's going on?

That's interesting, as I asked my local Discount tire shop if they would do it and they said they would, no problem.

I'm having an independent dealer put my new tires on (exactly the same as what you said), as they will also do a front alignment and Discount tire would not.

My local shop is Community Tire Pros. Supposedly they have hundreds of affiliated locations nationwide

Is this some sort of policy to avoid potential lawsuits if something goes wrong or premature wear on parts?

I'll let y'all know how it goes tomorrow.
I've been assured my shop will do it with no problem.

I bought mine online and had them shipped directly to my local tire shop. They had no problem installing larger tires then stock. At the time Discount Tire wasn't a sponsor here but maybe @Discount Tire could chime in and help you out.

If for some reason they cant is there an off road shop nearby?

Liability yes, but more than likely the concern is you are in an catastrophic accident that is somehow blamed on the tires not being the correct size. Since they are the installer, they could be responsible for damages, which could be millions.

It's the same reason we need warning labels like this:

Take it to a local non-franchised car repair place that can install and balance tires. No corporate rules to worry about.

They obviously don't want your business. Call around until you find someone who will. Everyone likes to tout Discount Tire and these other nationwide chains but to be honest, I much prefer dealing with the same people every year or two at my local tire shop. They have always treated me fairly and been more than happy to do something not "ordinary".
My advice: ask around your neighborhood and find a local that appreciates your business and treats you with respect. You're the one spending money, they need to earn your business.

The discount tire by me will do it. This might have something to do with you being in California. Costco wouldn't install wider tires on my mustang so it's their national policy.

Check out a local off road shop.

We will certainly install 265/70R-17 sized tires on the 17x8 XLT wheels, as long as the tires are properly load rated, which nearly all the models offered in this size are. We apologize if you were told otherwise and would like to help further - PM coming your way.

Like several others have said, no problem at all having my local Discount Tire install 265/70/17 on the stock magnetic rims either.
