Flipping The Spare Tire

I flipped the spare tire today so I could easily access the air valve. From the factory the spare is mounted upside down.

Flipping it doesn't affect ground clearances... I measure before and after, see photo's below. I took lots of photo's so the members here could see how all the parts fit together and how the lifting / lowering mechanism works. I have a 2 post lift in our barn... hopefully you folks will find this helpful.

IMO Ford did a good job designing the lifting chain and it's related mechanism. They even included a funnel shaped deal to help ensure the crank rod finds the hoist hole..

Thanks for this helpful information and the great photos. The new (used) set of tires and spare that I'm installing today are LT265/70R/17C BFG K02's. The reason that I asked if this is a one man job is that fortunately I haven't had to change out a spare yet located under a Truck bed. I was assuming that one person could pull it off but you never know how the automobile industry will engineer a device for convenience:question: :)

It's a straightforward swap assuming you can physically move the tires around. The stock FX4 tires are just over 60lbs on the 17in wheels. My 285/70s and aftermarket wheels are 90lbs.

Mistakes were made...

It's for sure a one man job. Glad the write up was helpful.
Appreciate it John. The tires and wheels were mounted this afternoon so I plan to switch out the spare tomorrow. The upgraded set looks sweet! Photos coming soon. :thumbsup:

90 lbs. is a heavy tire. A person could built some muscle handling these! I would assume that my upgraded tires (265/70/17) would probably weigh about what the FX4 stockers do. I will need to carry my original stock 4 STX tires and spare upstairs to store after I switch out the spares. Maybe this will be enough exercise to cancel my gym workout tomorrow :LOL:
