Since the op desires to learn this link might be helpful on everything you need to know about conn rods and preventing failures. I'd agree - ditch the failed oil pump theory and look to a rod end cap bolts or a valve failure . Pistons and rods deal with massive forces - both on downstrokes and upstrokes and they do reach a breaking point, maybe caused by a LSPI event, maybe the slightest imperfection in a component.

When I started to hear pinging with my 5-Star tunes, even when the OAR was maxed out (best value), I quickly went elsewhere. I at first blamed winter fuel, but I experimented with different fuel sources, etc. and it continued and was mostly at high load and low rpm. Right where an LSPI event could occur. I knew it was only a matter of time until the dreaded super knock, so I switched tunes/tuners. BTW, with the same fuel the canned SCT tune did not have any pinging and neither does the Unleashed tunes.

You could not hear the pinging with the radio on at a moderate to low level, btw. But with it off, you could hear it. Properly gapped one-step colder plugs as well.

I don't mean this to sound like 5-Star bashing, but when you shoot for big dyno numbers to advertise, then you are gonna get on the edge in certain scenarios. I live in a higher altitude area, so I am sure that was an effect. I sent NUMEROUS logs for each revision and all during my normal drive.

@Project Midnight .. when you first saw the oil light come on, how many miles and how many minutes was it until you reached your home?

My apology in advance if you already answered this.

A little over 19,000 miles, which delayed this repair... I never had a “Check Engine“ light... Ford wanted to look into this more intuitively... took 3 weeks while paying for rentals, for ”all the mods” Hell, you could have said that when you opened the hood... lmao to all my guys out there... Don’t replace your air filter intake with a K@N or AFE, don’t replace your exhaust with a Ford Motorsport Performance Exhaust, because that will void your warranty too... don’t put a Febreeze smell good thingy on your air vents, cause that’ll kick out the Air Conditioner air compressor, because it had to flow through that Autozone tack on... don’t personalize your truck at all... it’s forbidden... you have to keep it factory stock, or NO SOUP FOR YOU!! ??

It was about 15 miles towards my job, and 15 miles back home... I drove in the right hand lane with the hazards on... what was strange, is that the oil pump light didn’t come back on, when I restarted my truck... so that’s why I decided to limp it home with hazards flashing and all the noise... the Ranger got me home, and that’s golden to me... as I got closer to home, the noise became louder, and I think, thats when I threw the rod... I pulled up enough speed to coast home into my driveway...

Given that info - would agree with torquerules that likely a lspi incident - that can damage the conn rod bearing insert thus beginning the sequence of engine destruction.

Could you guys help me out?? I don’t understand the chart, I see arrows going from white to dark, but nothing varies in format for me, so it’s confusing to me...

With that being said...

I appreciate everyone’s help, and to everyone that has reached out to me... thank you... I want to show all of you a pic of my wife and I, about to lose another Texans game a few years back lol... ?? we suck LMAO!!! and I do, believe, there’s a season 3 amongst us... but it’s the Gentlemen that want to help, and the Gentlemen that want the help, is what keeps this forum alive.. I appreciate everyone of you, even if you were a nay sayer... lol... kidding, but true... you give a different side, debate... and debate is good... otherwise, I’d have a 5000 HP Lamborghini that I built on my own, if I could afford it, and left to my own devices ??

Just a hypothesis but what could have happened :

lspi event - essentially a big uncontrolled detonation in the cylinder, pushes the piston down with sufficient force to damage the rod end bearing insert - normally floats on a very thin oil cushion, the pieces of the insert cause drop in oil pressure, oil light comes on. When you restart engine it's clear, maybe from oil pickup screen unclogging but your connecting rod no longer is riding on the oil cushion , the insert is gone and as you drive the rod end is getting chewed up and eventually gives way - force of rotating crankshaft "throws" rod thru the block, piston has struck and damaged a valve but you have made it home and yes your 2.3L heavily modded ecoboost is finished,

Agreed 100%

Possibly, but you've got to remember he drove it home after it blew. Which is amazing in and of itself

Op, thanks for starting a new thread.;)

The rod separated itself from your crankshaft and then went through your block...the massive hole that drained all your oil is what gave you your low oil light, not an oil pump failure. In my experience, a rod failure like this indicates a detonation problem, and to me, that would be LSPI (as mentioned above) or a tune that was too lean. Once you start building an engine, it has always been my knowledge to have the tune built to your specific table on a dyno. Mail-in tunes scare me for this particular reason.

Other common reasons for catastrophic engine failure are dropped valves. This is exactly what it sounds like. When you mis-shift or hold on to a gear too long and bring it past redline for too long, the weakest link will fail and that is usually the tiny little valve and not the huge connecting rods and bolts. The valve will quite literally drop or stretch into the combustion chamber, make contact with the piston at high velocity, and become shrapnel inside your engine.

There are a lot of variables, but my history in amateur motorsports has shown these two reasons to be the most common cause of failure. Oil pump failures were rare, even in older cars pushed to the limit for hours. With all due respect and friendliness I highly doubt your brand new and robust oil pump failed on your average commute.
Very good explanation.

Moneyshifted my FiST into 2nd instead of 4th on the highway @ about 60mph when I first got it. Buried the tach and thought for sure I dropped a valve. But I escaped unscathed. Man that shifter is vague.
You really should delete that part of both threads.

What you did essentially voids your Stage 3 warranty.
