I have a couple of the Harbor freight 5 gal gas cans that I take for off-roading and longer camping trips when I am towing. I have a tonneau cover and use milk crates for my gear so the gas cans fit in snugly and then I run a ratchet strap through it all. Moving blanket on bottom works well to keep things from vibrating or moving

I am on the fence about the extended range tank

Was thinking about purchasing this:

Or this, but didn't want to mount it and was too expensive:

Unless you are building a special "off road" truck .
I would use a good quality "plastic" gas can.[there are many]
and only carry them [loaded ] when needed.
The weight of steel cans and the mounts ,takes even more payload that the ranger does not have.
For my truck,, I am looking at a pair [or more] 2.5 gal "plastic " cans to strap in the bed.
The "plastic " will not tear up the bed , It is lighter/ easier to use [ gray haired] and if he worst happens,, they bounce!!!!!!![cost less too]
The question is " how much gas do you NEED".
The truck gets 20+ on road, 10+ towing [bigger trailers].
5gal is like 50 to 100 miles extra ..
My 2 2.5 gal tanks , can top of the truck at the trail head,, and leave some "just in case"
To get back out to a station , If you "top off" before you start in at the nearest station
to the trail head as you should,,,

The question is " how much gas do you NEED".
For off-roading and camping?
5 gallons minimum
10 gallons tops

For preps?
If you have to ask, you aren't prepared.
I'd like to have about 20 to 30 gallons in reserve.

Keep in mind if you are on the road leaving because of an issue and you get gridlocked, your 20MPG drops significantly.

True , Pereo [BUT] in your truck ,going around or cross country is more likely VS car.
And in Prep [aka SHTF] there will be less worry about regulations or max weight.
Example, Alaska aircraft [Bush Plane"If you can close the door on it, and drag it into the air , alls good"]
