We don't get many dust storms out here in the west valley, seems like all the ones you see on tv are out in the east valley. We have had some small ones right before a big summer storm but nothing like those 3 story high ones that roll through the east. But seeing how they are there's no way I'd be willingly going out to be in the middle of one.
Hi Dave,

North of us, south of you are Pima Cotton fields. Notorious for causing dust storms over I10. Here in Green Valley, we have Pecan Trees. Long ago, Henry Ford tried in our valley to grow rubber trees for making tires. Did not work out and there was a move to cotton...Pima Cotton is a premier product as I understand it. Well Pima Cotton moved closer to Phoenix and the Pecan has replaced it. We are the third largest produce of Pecans and 100% supplier to Costco... They shake the trees mechanically and then vacuum up the pecans. Both operations results in quite a bit of dust for the days they do this and limits our view of the Santa Rita Mountains.

View from our patio...

BTW...this is 10 miles away and the closest I want to ever see snow for the rest of my life... :)

Hi Phil,

Goodyear still has many cotton fields too. It was founded back 1917 and Goodyear Tire bought several thousand acres to cultivate cotton used for tire cords.

I've read those fields in the east valley are a lot bigger than the ones we have out here causing the dust storms to intensify. IIRC they build up through the open areas of Queen Creek and strengthen as they approach the valley. This one from 2018 still stands out to me as one of the largest I've ever seen.... on tv. ? 70miles wide and 5,000' high!:surprised:

I agree with the snow....That's close enough for me too! :like:

Anyone have a good realtor recommendation for GV or Outside of Tucson or Surprize for +55 community? Thanks. :^)
I'll message a couple realtors I do work for that cover the Surprise area. Phil would know better in the GV area.
The Surprise/Sun City area is a pretty good location - White Tank Mtns, Caterpillar Proving Grounds, Luke AFB, close enough to sports in Goodyear and the PIR at the foot of the Estrellas. I was on the other side of the White Tanks on the Raven golf course in Verrado. I loved it there - I could go mountain biking, my wife could golf.

yadda, yadda, yadda...

She got Verrado, I got the vacation property on Prince Edward Island, Canada in the divorce.

?

Gee, The Realtors never mention this part, only how much monthly payment can you afford for the shack they are fronting as heaven on earth.

Out in Maricopa, those dust storms shut everything down. Traffic was stopped on the 347 and I swear that someone was throwing buckets of dirt on my windshield for about 1/2 hour.
once the dust settles down. the rain starts. LOTS of rain. Flooding parking lots and knocking down trees. After the rain, more dust just to leave a nice layer of mud on everything to remind you who is really in charge!

Fun Fact - you should not get gas after a rain storm at the Circle K on the corner of John Wayne Blvd and Smith Enke road.

The dust storms in the west valley are small and usually form before a big summer storm hits. Nothing like that wall of dust in my previous post. The winds will pick up and you'll see the sky turn hazy brown. You wouldn't know it was a dust storm unless you were out there in it. I was caught driving in one several years ago and it came and went before you knew it. Slow down and pull over and it'll pass quickly. Now I wouldn't want to be out in the east valley when those large ones hit! :surprised:

We had just moved here when one of those struck....
It made the news in Texas and my friends and former neighbors all called to check on me. I told them, "It's just like riding out a hurricane, except the winds are half as strong and it only lasts 30 to 45 minutes instead of 3 to 4 days."

If you have ridden out a bad thunderstorm where ever you are from, then you can ride one of these out. People from California are still piling into the state and they aren't worried.

I still get calls/text from friends and family back in MA when they see them on the news. I guess it is intense trying to visualize one of these storms, just like watching a tornado on tv. You can't grasp the severity of them (tornados) until you see one first hand.

The first dust storm I was in I was driving down the 101 back in 2011 on my first visit looking for house. My girlfriend called me and said she'd seen on the news a dust storm was hitting the west valley. I said I'm in it now, pulled over and a couple minutes later was on my way. I've lived through some fierce Nor'Easter snow storms and ice storms that took out the power lines up and down the east coast. I'll take a dust storm any day! :tumbleweed:

I ride a MC and getting stuck in in a So Cal Santa Ana is no fun I can tell you from experience but adding dust into the mix makes it even worse. Those winds frequently knock over Semi's and RV's along the Freeway.

Better hope they do not Californicate Arizona . I remember Cal. invaded Washington state now they are Cal. junior .
